Cards? Board games? Other? Which ones hold up to the test of time? We love playing games, and I've been trying to have more and more game nights with no TV. We find most of our games at garage sales and at the Salvation Army store, but I'm always looking for something new to try, especially the ones that make you think, rather than relying on chance. I was really excited to finally find a vintage wood tile Scrabble and 'smath game yesterday!!
We still play CandyLand.. and even daddy and I enjoy it. We do like to make silly rules.. like if you draw a double you have to stand up and turn around. We all get a good giggle out of it. Uno, yahtzee, racko, life, monopoly, clue and bingo are common here, we need a new scrabble set, and I want rummikub. We have quite a few "school" games we play or will someday play, many are above my kids levels but I buy when I find cheap... 'smath we have but have never played lol, buy it right, presto change-o, discount (never played yet), gramopoly, diploma dogs, game of states (very very old), where in the world is carmen sandiego, where in the usa is carmen sandiego, national geographic on assignment.
The kids' favorite right now is Sequence States & Capitals. Our other current favs are: Dogopoly, Swish, Big Fish li'l Fish, Spelldown, Quirkle, I Spy Snap, and Takeoff. Less frequent favs: Score Four, Matching Madness, Scrabble Junior, Some Spongebob thing, Fishing Time, Repeat or You're Obsolete, Wordplay, Blockus, Sum Swamp, I Spy Go Fish, The Great Word Race, Clue, and Wildflower Bingo. I just bought Rummy Roots - English Vocabulary Building Game for Greek and Latin Roots, but I think it may be a bit too challenging for them. Mommy has to figure it out first.....the directions gave me a headache. lol
Apples to Apples and Five Crowns are the favorites. Monopoly, In a Pickle, Fibberz, and Headbands (hilarious!!) are also good ones.
Catch Phrase! And something I know no one on here has ever heard of: WABBIT WAMPAGE!!! Carl's best friend had it YEARS ago, and we would play it all the time. So a few years back, I searched on-line and bought it for him for Christmas. Imagine Looney Tunes in a game. Each season has a goal. In spring, you plow fields and plant carrots. In the summer, you harvest carrots. In the fall, it's Hunting Season (when the Farmer has the advantage over the Wabbits) and in winter, the tables turn and the Wabbits try to blow up all the Farmer's buildings. It's really lots of fun (but not for younger kids!)
My son's favorites are monopoly (we use the 1 hour rule since it can go on forever), stratego, and risk.
Yahtzee, Blokus, Qwirkle, Authors (card game), Stratego, Scrabble, and Boggle. Those are our favorites off the top of my head.
Minthia - I just bought an older version of Authors on Ebay here a few days ago! I'm soo excited to get it in because that was one of my favorites as a kid. Warm fuzzies..... That Headbandz game looks fun. We have something similar, but I can't think of the name. I don't like playing it because you have to hold these face cards with a too small for an adult hole up to your face the whole time. Unfortunately I've been spending too much time on Amazon looking at games!! There are just soooo many good looking ones. These looked like fun..... http://www.amazon.com/STARE-JUNIOR-Game-2nd-Edition/dp/B00004W60H/ref=pd_sim_t_6 http://www.amazon.com/SET-Enterprises-5000-Quiddler/dp/B00000IV95/ref=pd_sim_sbs_t_3 http://www.amazon.com/SET-Enterprises-100-Set/dp/B00000IV34/ref=pd_sim_t_4
Apples to Apples has been a favorite for years, but now my children are older, Table Topics provides a lot a fun. It's not really a game, just a list of things to discuss. Then it's my family who provide the humor.
Blizzard- I played the game authors all growing up and was so excited when I found it at a local specialty bookstore. Now my kids love it too! Seriously warm fuzzies!
Some of the games we like: Yahtzee Racko Clue Clue Secrets & Spies Boggle Qwirkle Skippity Dizios Skip Bo Phase 10 PixMix Q-Bitz (one of my favs) I recently got Cooking Up Sentences (there's a nice review here, and she has other reviews of some cool looking games I'd like to get) and some other "educational" games, like Keys to Comprehension, the 5 W's Game, Reading Between the Lines, and Loose Change. At a thrift store last month I got Using Context Clues Riddle of the Ruins for $1.00; it's like brand new. Yay...I love it when that happens!!
How much room have you got??? LOL Apples to Apples Uno Scrambled States of America Bananagrams Yahtzee Clue Othello Stratego Sorry Life Monopoly Scrabble Scattagories Pictionary (we use a dry erase board though) Bunco (though we don't play this one often) You've Been Sentenced (this is a funny game!) Outnumbered I think that's it, if I think of more, I'll let you know!
Words on my mind (like Boggle), Phase 10, Uno, Reverse Characes, Life, Blurt (great for vocab), Monopoly (card game version - much shorter)
Some of my favorites: Uno Taboo Battleship Have you tried these (good thinking games)? Othello Mastermind I also like to play chess occasionally. I am NOT good at it, but I do try.
Our family game night favorites are... Homeschoolopoly Rory's Story Cubes Boochie Twister Hoopla Apples to Apples Uno squiggle connect
