    Stacy......

    Are you back??? :p :)

Yep, I don't mind where I post because I AM a teacher!. :p Some teaching public, others teach private or following tutorial methods (thats us home schoolers)...

Ok....but yes I understand how some newbies still don't like ps teachers advising them.

I guess I always don't mind: Let see is it informing, enlightening or just *arguing and debating* with certain ps teachers that think ps is the only way! :p

Well I can say that I certainly don't like conflict. It does come up with a subject that is so controversial like education. Let alone, private or public, christian or secular..

Oh well, I guess I thought you already bought Calvert  or are you still finishing your Rod and Staff?

I hadn't bought it either. I'm on no deadline....I wanted to do somethings this year that I had picked out so we'll probably order the end of the year or beginning of next year. I stil like their writing the best.

It just stil bothers me how everything has to *stay together* and well you KNOW how I feel about their lesson manuals.. YES, heavens I saw all the posts about the *manuals*...that has been one subject that repeatedly sparks controversy.

I just keep thinking if your still *waffling* about it, then put something you want together and try it. Good gracious your son is only in 2nd grade right? :D You have plenty of time, if you find that you want something different. You have an *only*. So its not like you have to take care of newborn and have some other toddlers hanging off of you. :D If you have the time, money and mental....GO FOR IT!!!

Stacy this will not be the first nor last year you go through this. Each year is different. What most people start off with, they don't end up with. I too like a mixture and have ALWAYS added way more and have NEVER done all of Calvert. I will NOT be dictated to that way.

I have always been a *pick and choose ingredients style*, even on boxed curriculum. However, I have other children, so curriculum in the long run won't get wasted.

On the other hand, since you have an ONLY, you don';t have hopefully  so tight a budget crunch as some with 2 or more children. So there is latitude for you.

    Oh wel, blah, blah, blah......

Let me know if your still *waffling back and forth* and hope you check in once and while.

We just love our new spot. I always say we are SO IMPORTANT with our own website :p

    Blessings

    Stacy,
If you have children, you're a teacher in my eyes. (That was something I had told the school in March wehn they questioned my ability to teach Andrew). I told them it doesn't take a genious to teach. If I can teach my children to walk and talk and hold a bottle and a spoon and ride a bike the other stuff is a piece of cake (although somedays I wonder why I ever taught Noah how to talk - he was blessed with the gift to gab  )

I don't think that it takes a degree to be able to teach our children. We know them better than anyone else does and we can teach them things and in ways that public school will never be able to match.

    Welcome aboard!

    I'm here...

I posted some on abcteach but was a late-comer. I have a 7yo girl and a 3yo boy. We are going into our second year of homeschooling and I love it! I did teach kindergarten for six years so I knew I would enjoy teaching my kids full time at home.

I am taking the summer off from homeschooling. I figured we would be busy doing movies, camps and such. I was wrong. DD broke her leg at gymnastics camp about three weeks ago and now has six pins in her leg. She has an outside fixator device to hold the pins in place and not a cast. She is learning how to get around on her bottom and also uses a walker. It has been very rough but she's getting much better. She'll have to wear the leg device until the end of summer. Hopefully, we'll still be able to take our vacation when she gets it off. So, our summer is a little bit blown. She's done lots of arts/crafts, writing, reading, tv watching, game playing and such. I hope I can keep her busy for six more weeks!

    Poor Avery!

    Missy,
I'm so sorry to hear about Avery's leg. I had been wondering where you have been. I've always thought that summer must be the absolute worst time to break a bone! There's just so much stuff to do in the summertime.
I hope that everything heals up fine and that she's back on her feet again soon.

    Finally checking in. :D

Been busy getting our Homeschool Open House ready, starting a Smoothing the Way www.smoothingtheway.com program in our area for new homeschoolers, vacationing, keeping the house some what clean and when we have a spare moment we do fun stuff. HA!

TinaTX is right about our event. The President of Texas Home School Coalition, Tim Lambert and his wife Lyndsay are coming. We've got a program book, prizes, handouts, freebies, guest speakers, snacks and.....the list goes on. You are all invited!!! :p

We use Calvert 1st and add in....whatever we feel like. HA! Just because it comes with a teacher manual doesn't mean you are bound by it. SHESH! Most of the time on the math we just do the pages - if we are having trouble with a concept..then I'll read. I guess I approach it like I do computer software. Play with it and when all else fails. RFM

If you like the math, just buy math, like the reading get a Houghton-Mifflin catalog and order away. There is always a way. 8)

    Ok...I'm off and running.

    Hello

:D Glad to see a lot of you here! It is good to be back together, I hope the others find their way here. We are awaiting the arrival of our new Abeka curr, watching our pumpkin patch grow, working wheat ground and getting hubby Jerry ready to go back to work. Spencer and Cale are now 5 and 7, Spencer will officially start school when it arrives! You might pray for us, as he just isn't very interested in school. Hopefully he will come around when it arrives. Hope you all have a good day! Mary

    Hi Kristy....

Are you going to be near Bryan/College Station on Tuesday July 20?

I thought you lived outside of Dallas? is that right? You are very welcomed to come, we absolutely love to meet ya and any others here that have a jet that can make it down for the evening!

Seriously, we both have been frantically working, and I know I have been thinking Geeze wouldn't it be nice if some of our friends here could be there? So we are a little sad  about it.

Oh well, we are waffling back and forth about posting this website on our program. Should we? should we not? Should we? should we not? I mean this purely from the standpoint that we BOTH will probably get tons more questions. We kind of like coming here and getting a nice *breather* KWIM?

Oh well, we might just have to so that the newbies and not so new know what a nice place this is to come and visit!!! :D

Isn't Kris in Corpus C.? That would be a drive. :p

I recently heard about a couple of groups down there. Kris did you get plugged in?

I think there is even a Smoothing the Way group down there. I can double check if anyone needs me to.

I am glad I finally found everyone. Between computer problems and VBS I haven't been able to log on. I am glad to see so many from ABC and A to Z here. Lorna did you get the post card we sent?

Welllllllll apparently I've missed all the conflict and stuff, but someone emailed me to give me the heads up.

I'm Kathe, from New Brunswick, Canada and this August would have been one year for me at ABC Teach.

I'm homeschooling my five, who are 13, almost 12, almost 9 and the twins are almost 7. None of my children have ever been to public school, so I've taught K to 7, and ready to start grade 8 shortly. The almost 12 year old is a DD; the rest, boys.

We school through the summer at a relaxed pace and scaled down scope, but I'm tutoring my girlfriend's daughter, which is requiring some juggling. She needs intensive one on one, but we're working it all out.

This seems like a great place, although I've not had time to look around. I have to say, though, that sharing the former place with PS teachers did NOT intimidate me one little bit. They can learn mountains from us regarding classroom management IMHO. :p

    Go in peace, all.

    I got here

I am here now. Better late than never. We have been busy. Trying to unstress during the summer. After my brother died suddenly we had a hard time getting through the last few weeks last year. Then I had surgery. What a month or two.
Maybe next year will be better. I don't plan to start until August.

As far as the surgery, I am fine. The lump in my breast came out fine and I go back in 6 months for a recheck on it. As for my brother's death, I know from my mom's passing 14 years ago that time and prayer are the only things that help much. Mother was sick for a while and that helped with the grieving process. We knew she was passing from ALS. No cure for that. With my brother I had talked with him at 2 pm and got a call at 3 pm to get there he was seeing his last hours. I don't know if he ever even knew we were there. He never responded but they said he could hear me talking. He died at 6:10 am the next morning. I was at his side. Thanks to the Lord for that. Please keep me in your prayers. My twin boys have had a hard time understanding the passing and the suddenness of it all.

    Lorna,

So sorry to hear about all of this! What happened to your brother?

We've all missed talking since ABC closed down and we've lost touch on things that have happened.

    my brother

Well, we don't actually know what was wrong with him but he had a liver problem. (Didn't drink). It was swollen and they drained 1 liter of it. Then did a bioposy of it. He had internal bleeding, went into seizures and everything started shutting down.
