My 6yo DS loves Math. We are using McRuffy. It uses a workbook and manipulative combination approach. However, I want to change Math curriculums for 1st grade because I don’t like the spiral method and it doesn't work real well for him. So, can you point me to some workbook/manipulative combination curriculums that are more of a mastery method? Will you also add what you like or what your DC likes about it? Thanks!

I don't have a lot of experience with many home school programs but I switched to Math-U-See for my son and it is more mastery based, that uses manipulatives. The manipulatives are a varied base ten blocks- from ones to hundreds. They also come with a DVD the kids watch- I like to watch it with him and work through problems with him instead of him just watching it and then the problems- watch and pause, do it and discuss and then continue. Have him do the placement tests to make sure you put him in the right program for him too- which is found on their website.

My daughter however is the oppostie- she loves McRuffy and does great with it =)
    Good luck!

*Forgot to note that he likes the video and focusing on concept at a time for the most part. He tends to be a bit bored with the one type of manipulative, but overall he is doing so much better and enjoys math more!

Miquon! We thought about MUS, but it's way too expensive. Miquon is mastery-based, much less expensive, and teaches kids how to problem-solve. It's written for 1st - 3rd grades (two books per grade), but at the end of the 6th book, you can usually jump in to 5th grade for other publishers. All you need are the 6 workbooks, the "Lab Sheet Annotations" (teacher book), and a set of cheap rods. Total cost for 3 years worth of math is less than $100.

    Scope & Sequence: http://www.fun-books.com/books/toc/miquon_math-TOC.htm

The cool thing about a mastery-based program like this is that you can skip what you know, spend more time on what you don't know, and jump between books if you want to dig deeper into just one area before learning the other areas.
