Has anyone ever used this? How does it work? Is it like a forum? I was thinking the FlyLady group was a Yahoo group--does anyone know if that's right? So I guess what I am asking is: How does a Yahoo group differ from just doing group emails?

The yahoo groups I belong to - people post and it sends an email to me. i respond to the email and it posts to the whole group. It is not forum like at all in my expereince.

I am not 100% positive, but I think Flylady is not a yahoo group - but a weekly/daily emailed subscription type thing.

    :) Does that help?

I am not sure as I am still confused.

Here is why I am asking. Maybe that will help you guys help me!

In a moms group I am part of, lately lots of people have been emailing to the whole group back and forth, and it was suggested that we have a Yahoo group to keep mailboxes less cluttered. But would that cut down on it any?

Having a Yahoo Group COULD cut down on the inbox clutter....BUT only if a person were to choose "daily digest emails" setting. What that does is all posts to the group in a day is compacted into one email a day. Otherwise you get them all individually, responses too.

I do like them to some degree b/c if you're not into a subject you just delete it. BUT....I'm in THREE groups, so my inbox gets very full sometimes. :D

    Yahoo and FLYLADY

Flylady is a yahoo group...or the reminders are networked thru a yahoo group. I'll warn you that you get a million e-mails from the flylady though....which is good if you are doing all the steps everyday....for me, it just reminded me that I was NOT doing very well :)

I love her in person though...she came to Ft. Campbell when I lived there and came to talk to some of us army wives....she's hilarious and very sincere.

Anyway, I'm on a few homeschool yahoo groups for my local area and one military homeschool group. Both have been very informative and supportive, especially for local homeschool and other events. Since we just moved here a few months ago. I'd be lost without that group for events for the kids.

I thought it was. I used to get the emails, but I finally took my name off because there were just so many. I need to go check her site more often, though, because the emails did prompt me to get off my rear end...My sister and I got to see her in Tulsa a couple of years ago and she seemed like a really nice lady.

And you don't have to have a yahoo email account to be in a yahoo group, right?

    I'm not sure

I know you can have the yahoo group e-mails sent to any e-mail but I don't know if you have to have a yahoo account to enroll. I have both. I used to have the flylady stuff sent to our old comcast e-mail but when we moved we had to shut that one down. I started using my yahoo one during the move. Once we settled in a got a new internet provider, I decided to keep all my yahoo acct for many things and just use our new e-mail for family and close friends.....keeps it from getting clogged up by all my homeschool stuff :)

You do not need a yahoo e-mail to be in a yahoo group. If you choose the e-mail option, they will e-mail them to where ever. You will have to register with yahoo, but that's quick and easy. :)

You could do the yahoo group and just not subscribe to the emails? You can read everyting right there on the forums. I have several yahoo groups and I really don't like the tons of emails, I would rather read through the threads and respond that way. So, yes a group would cut way down on emails.

Yahoo groups have four options: you can receive every single message via email; you can receive all messages, up to 25, in one email per day (if there are more than 25 it kicks out a digest... so flylady puts out around 4-6 digests a day which is 100-150 emails, totally off the wall guessing estimate but you get the idea); or you can choose to receive only messages which the group owner marks as "Special Notices"; or you can choose to receive no mail whatsoever.
If you choose either of the last two, Special Notices or No Mail, you can go to that group's home page and read all the messages in chronological order. It is *SIMILAR* to a message board that way, but they are not linked by THREAD like they are here. If you click on one, then at the bottom it will have which ones are related to the same theme. If you're just on the messages page, it lists all of the messages/emails in the order that they came through the group. (So, if there are three or four conversations going on, they might all be mixed in together....)

Most likely, the flylady has a couple of different things. She probably has a newsletter from her site that sends out tips and reminders for the day. I do know that she also does have a yahoogroup for USERS/followers of her system, where there is a lot of chit chat and as was mentioned HUNDREDS of emails every day. ;)

A yahoogroup differs from just group emails because of a few things. First and foremost, it saves all the messages on the site without you having to save each and every email. Also, you have some features available like a group calendar, a place for members to upload photos, a list of links members can add to, a place to upload any files you want to share, a *POLL* feature similar to message boards... and there are probably more that are escaping my mind right now.

I'm an old yahoo groups pro. LOL Need to know anything else, just ask! Hope this helps! (I'm about to set up a yahoogroup for homeschoolers in my more local area, rather than for the entire city. Austin traffic is HORRIBLE, and us southies hate having to fight it to all of the hs activities which all seem to be NORTHWARD.... ugh. And now I'm OT!)

Thanks, DaLynn! There has been a big push by some of our group members to try this, so we may do it on a limited basis and see how it goes. I am sure I will be back with more questions!

    You are most welcome. :)

I own a currently inactive yahoogroup for scrapbookers. If you'd like me to invite you just so you can look around and see how it works, I'd be happy to do so. Just PM me your email addy. :)

Yes, you can do yahoogroups without a yahoo email. You DO need to sign up for a yahoo ID though. With the yahoo ID, you can do email, groups, IM, and tons of other things. You have to sign up for each of those individually, but you can use the same ID for everything once you have one.
With yahoo, generally you type the name of what you want - groups - followed by a dot yahoo dot com. If you want messenger, it's messenger dot yahoo dot com. Mail is mail dot yahoo dot com, and so on and so forth. ;) From any of those you can sign up for an ID. :) Once you've an ID, you can sign up for groups, start groups, whatever you'd like.

Anyway, glad I could be of some help.

(And I also own a mostly-active but slow cuz it's summer yahoogroup for scrappers, if anyone ELSE is interested. LOL I didn't know SoonerMama was a scrapper at all! LOL)
