My little (27 years old) brother just called to tell me that he and his wife are newly pregnant with their first baby. I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!!

I am a moderately decent sewer, and I have some time since we are looking at Oct 24 as a due date. I need to get making something. What should I make? I can't decide!!

    Congratulations!

You can make baby blankets, "shoulder" cloths (burpy cloths), a large blanket for the crib, or baby clothes. There really are soooo many cute baby clothes out for kids, and they outgrow things so quickly at the early stages, that it is a hard choice! My MIL and GMIL sewed up large flannel blankets and hemmed all around the edges with multi-colored thin yarn. It was wonderful to have a couple dozen of those to use by the time we had the third child! They did them in white, maroon and dark green since we didn't know boy or girl.

My sister made something for me when my oldest was born.... very thin, cotton-blend (?) baby blankets that were about double the size of usual baby blankets. I had no idea how much I'd love them! They wrapped him much more securely than smaller blankets when we went outside, they were large enough for him to roll on the floor when he first started moving a little, they soaked up projectile vomit in the middle of church (LOL!!) better than a silly little burp cloth, and the corners ended up being his "lovie" chew toys until he was around 2 (when I quietly confiscated them!). I still love those blankets, have them put away in a safe place, and will give them to him one day.

Every mom should have something like that. My sister also made me a Pooh blanket/comforter with his name and bday on it, but honestly, we never used it. I was so afraid of messing it up, it was small, it was thick, etc. I just didn't use it. The other three blankets in the set I mentioned were very plain boy-ish fabrics. I actually hated them when I got them, which is why they got SO much use at first (because I thought I'd wear them out quickly and toss them), but now, I can't imagine his babyhood without them. :)

Do you cross-stitch? If so, you can get some waste canvas and cross stich some cute designs are plain white onesies. Depending on how your sewings skills are, you can make a lovely baby quilt. A baby quilt is really very easy, and can be very simple or very complicated.

2littleboys, I made a quilt for my g'baby. At the shower, I told the baby's mom that it was OK to use it. I wouldn't be upset if I saw a big stain in the middle from where the baby messed on it. Same with stuff like cross stiched bibs. What good are they if you're not willing to let them get slobbered all over?
