I wonder how a business decides to charge a fee or not. What are the determining factors?
As I said in my previous post, we do not have to sign for credit if it is under $20, depending on where we go and I still do not have to enter my pin number.

This is interesting indeed. I am enjoying this thread.:D

I know that when we are in California it seems that more places charge for credit card usage than other states. We learn real quick which ones to either pay cash or debit. I'm not paying any extra fees, it's my money and I'm not just handing it over, lol.

Ya know now that I get thinking about it there is one convience store that won't allow less than $5 on a card. They just implimented this and we have been wondering about it. Now I know. This thread is making me seriously consider going back to cash and checks most of the time

There's several places in my neck of the woods that don't accept checks.

We're starting to see that here as well or you have to be local. I guess good ole greenbacks it is. I could always go for the barter system. It always did make more sense to me anyway.

    Beats me how they decide!
I once asked why credit purchases take longer to clear, and if I remember right, it has to do with the store, not the bank.

Here, they all want ID to take a check. Our pizza place wants your driver's license number!

They've been burnt too many times WITH ID, so they're stopping altogether.

Now a days most people who take the checks do the electronic thing. I know the commasary and walmart to the electronic checks and I think one other major chain store. I still have checks with my parents address and our old house up the street addy on them. They are seldom used. We are gonna be retired in some other state and still have these checks.

Up until early last year, our checks were accepted upon delivery. Not any more! We have to pay cash or give a credit card number when ordering. So we pay cash now for delivery.

I know that their are alot of ma & pa stores that want checks. The campgrounds we are staying at wants either cash or checks. This way they don't get charged those fees. We still carry a check book because of this although I don't think that my dh has written a check in over a year.
