They are technically in the city of Houston...
But across the street from The cit of Nassau Bay...

Gas is getting easier to get on our side of town, but we are on the west side of houston, whereas that is the east side and it was hit really hard by the storm surge. But to be honest, there are too many people on the freeways an streets for gas to be that hard to find.

I think you should call Space Center Houston, before heading out on a trip.
 
hey I Just thought of an idea, and someone probably already has it, but he way texting is so commmon and people get internet on thier phones do they have a msg board at some place for people to let thier families know they are okay? That was the hardest thing when we had a really bad earthquake was finding out which familymembers were okay, and letting people know in WA. It turned out we could tell our Wa people but we could not get the people around us Lol. SO
If you guys get big storms all the time there should be a community msg board that you all could get to, ( via satalite Phones maybe? Did they still work?)
another idea is to have one of those charged up and read to go Walkie Talkie things..
in your emergency kits and stuff?
Since you all are going through this time and I am just watching it.. would any ofthose things helped?

Ike sure covered a lot of ground.
I am hearing more about Texas than I am hearing about Cuba and Haiti. I had no idea that many people were killed in Haiti. YIKES!

Jen, I don't know why you keep saying that, they are doing everything they can, and it takes time. I know you are hurting and so is everyone else. But, you need to be patient it takes time when something that big comes in. They are doing nothing but talking about it down here and all our stores are like going in at Christmas time they are begging everyone to give something for the hurricane people. So, I don't know where you get no one is doing anything. I know Monday our local jail lost lights and they had to go on emergency power till they could get some more guys down from the Houston area that went up there to help you all. So, there is alot of people there, but it does take time to fix everything and when you are there waiting it seems forever. It will all come together. Like my oldest told me the other day. Mom, all good things come to those who wait.

I don't think you're wrong. I watch the news every night, I live in Arizona, and I haven't seen anything about the hurricane in days. If I wasn't on this board and following this post I would have no clue about how bad things were there. I can't believe those pictures you posted, they are insane. I'm praying for everyone affected by this storm.

I don't know, here in PA we are still hearing about it all the time, what bothers me is all we are hearing about it Houston and Galveston, and nothing about all the other areas that were completely wiped out, there are some areas far worse than Galveston even, and we are hearing nothing about them, it's very sad.

You miss understood me/
I was referring to the fact that when you watch the national news, you would have thought nothing happened. Even the local news questioned the national news coverage. And how people are showing up in Houston on vacation or on business, not realizing that they are headed to basically a war zone, in some areas. That is what I was referring too.

The people here are FABULOUS!
No complaints, whatsoever. We could really be in a pickle if it weren't for all the crews from all over the us who have come to help get things back on line, that is for sure!

I think that Bolivar, High Island, the entire Galveston Bay Area and anything on the east side of the bay were just devastated.

There is a theory, here locally that the reason that the media choppers were not allowed up in the air, until the protests got really loud, was to prevent another Katrina style visual of the bodies in the water and the people getting plucked from roofs... So yea, it was a BIG fight for the news media to be allowed to fly over the bay and Galveston, as late as Sunday. Some reporters got smart and hired air boats... It looked like God just wiped it clean.

How do I know?
They (The feds) admit that this is what they were doing.... They are still looking for some 6000 missing people from the high island area. Not that all were lost, but that without communication means, who knows were they are and how many may be among the lost. I pray it is as many lost lines of communication as possible.

I just get really annoyed when more people, it would seem, would get more help if more people realized how bad it is. But without the coverage, there will never be a IKE relief concert. or what have you... I definately do not blame people.. just the media...

When Katrina hit, New Orleans got tons of coverage, bu the poor folks on the dirty side of the storm along Alabama and Mississippi barely got a mention. I just wish the journalists were more investigatory, not so much just "Rip and Read" from someone elses headlines...
 
I agree, Jennifer. Now, I'm not one to have the news shows on just a lot, but I have heard practically NOTHING. Your posts here are the most info I've gotten about it all week. (So, thanks! And I'm glad y'all are all okay! Was thinking about you all today.)

There are a lot of evacuees still here in Austin, and there is a lot of talk about when can they go back? I see now, thanks JenErix, that they will be here a while yet and we need to quit worrying about when they will leave and get them some help.

The food banks here are all empty. The HEB (major grocery chain) is doing a major food drive to help, and I've seen complaints that residents don't seem to want to donate... because it's not Christmas or something, who knows. The parents in our scout den are whining about doing a food drive, because the boys aren't the ones doing it. (Our argument is that if that is what they want, the boys can make the delivery, but by-gosh the people need help no matter WHO does it!)


UGH. I've wondered why there wasn't more coverage. And, honestly, I assumed that since there wasn't more coverage, that the damage must not be that bad. And I'm close enough to drive and go see it myself. Why are we not hearing any of this???
 
I think the red cross is doing a great job filing in the holes when FEMA drops the ball..


Like in the Alvin POD there was no food, just water and Ice.. so the red cross stepped in and gave out hot meals. very cool.

If anyone wants to help, donate blood or cash to the red cross. I think they are doing awesome.

We heard one story today on the radio about how Illinois was affected strongly with flood waters from Ike....


That's all we heard.


I just wish the news people didn't sleep on the job. There are some great journalists out there. But most new directors are just ugh! Dead.
 
I am back on page 38, lol long read today!
But I wanted to say keep your chins up Texas, California is on its way! They showed all kinds of efforts that our state is sending your way in the way of ( myf riends son who is already there working with the military hehe) but also in the way of red cross, of machines to help rebuild etc.
I saw truck loads of lumber that was donated and stuff like that too! So that is cool!
This was on the SAc news.. nto sure what the rest of the state is doing but hey , PTL!
I just looked at you rpictures of Galveston Is and said wow, could you just imagine your entire home, foundation and all gone completely? And then there is ONe home standing in the middle of wash out....
I think I would look at that homes foundation and make my new home to match it!

I read a story about that home yesterday. The owners lost their home in Rita, and hired engineers to make their new home hurricane proof. Although it is still standing, it was flooded and is uninhabitable.

The food banks here in SA are requesting food, too. Like Dalynn, I also heard that HEB was doing a huge drive. I've heard that HEB has donated much already. There are around 2000 evacuees in the one shelter open here (according to the SA news).

I do think that if the news was out there, more help would come in. I talked to a friend in TN yesterday, who had no idea how bad the area was. My BIL from Georgia may be sent to help restore power sometime during the next week.
