Looking for homemade granola tips

So one thing I keep meaning to try to make and never have is granola.

It's on the plan for next week so I'm looking for tips.

I have a recipe I want to try, but looking for any tips or recipes.

One question I have is about the oil. What kind do you use and why? Especially if you tried different oils.

We've been talking about it, too. I've been putting it off because of the time involved. I don't even have a recipe, so please share tips and good recipes!! :)

Sixcolar-I'm making up my own recipe :) I've been researching and I'm going with a simple one to start with-basically just oatmeal ... hoping I can sell it to the kids as oatmeal (As they aren't fans of granola in all forms....)

I'm hoping if the kids like it we can start adding in almonds, raisins, cranberries, flax seed, sunflower seeds, pecans, molasses, figs, cinnamon, etc

I have one that a friend of mine gave to me... it calls for either of these

½ C oil: coconut oil, safflower oil, or olive oil

I've thought of coconut oil but my hubby HATES coconut, it's more the texture than the taste but he has such a strong aversion to coconut I'm afraid to try coconut oil....

If you've never had coconut oil at all, you might still try it. It is extremely mild. Anything I've ever added it to, does not take on a "coconut" flavor. It's SO good for you, too!

I felt the opposite when we tried using it. I could use it in strong-flavored items like onions and not notice the taste, but any lighter flavored items I could taste the coconut. Some items I liked it, others did not mix well for me. Then again, maybe it was all in my head .

I know, I've been wanting to buy some but for the price if hubby doesn't like it....I could always make lotion with it I suppose! LOL

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but thought I'd share this trail mix real quick. I just made a batch last night and thought of this thread. :D

If you want to see a photo (I love photos with a recipe I'm thinking of making :D), click the link below for my blog:

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons honey
3 cups granola
2 cups M&Ms*
1 cup nuts (of your choice; mixed or peanuts or almonds, etc)
1 cup pretzel twists

Melt honey and butter over low heat, gently stirring, until blended. Remove from heat, and add granola, nuts, and pretzels. Stir until coated with honey and butter mixture. Spread on cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes. Spread on wax paper and allow to cool. Mix in M&Ms.

Notes:

*Honestly, I find 2 full cups of M&Ms to be a tiny bit too much. I'd consider cutting it to 1 cup.

The original mix I received is exactly as the above recipe. I could definitely see adding sesame seeds as well as dried cranberries. I personally do not care for raisins though I know many would prefer them over the cranberries. Any of these additions should be added with the granola, nuts, and pretzels.
