Movies you do NOT let your kids watch?

That are rated G or PG.

I have come across several that I would not let them watch. Just wondering if anyone else out there actually reviews the movies before you let the kids watch them. I thougth PG used to be for kids. Just all the curse words, se*ual undertones, smart mouthing and bathroom humor.

My list is VERY Long but only have time to put in a few.

The Wild -G
Ants -PG
Ghost Busters -PG

Oh and Night at the Museum, one curse word...why did they need it!

We always view movies before allowing Ems to watch them. Unless we are going to the movies then we check at pluggedinonline to see if there is anything inappropriate.
The rating does not matter to me. I have viewed some PG rated movies that are worse then R. It all depends.

The first one that comes to mind is Shark Tale- PG. My pet peeve is when we pay money to see a movie that has embedded adult content or cuss words randomly thrown in to an otherwise good movie. I also hate it when they market a movie to kids that they shouldn't see, and I don't understand why they remake stories and movies from our childhoods in a manner that makes the new movies too adult, too violent, too unlike the originals for kids today to see. The other reason we won't see something is for religious reasons (I should have listed this first as it is our primary motivation.), so we will not be going to see Evan Almighty - PG.

When someone in our home wants to see something that we have questions about despite its G or PG rating, we wait until it comes out in video. Then, we watch it as a family, so we can talk about it or turn it off if need be. Some, though, like Evan Almighty, won't even get a chance in our home.
 
I have let my 2 dd's watch PG-13 before ( and now). They are 9 and 11. We watch them first and if I think they can handle it or its not so in your face ( sex , nooooo, kissing ok , some bad lang. ok ,because we use the occassionaly S word in our house) and I believe we have raised them to know that its a movie and that we don't do the things that they do in the movies.

They have watched all of the Harry Potter movies ( because we have read the books so they know its going to be violent) , all of the Spiderman movies, all 3 Pirates of the Caribbean, they have seen Benchwarmers (that was borderline, as well as Shrek) , Napolean Dynamite, Fantastic 4,Lord of the Rings , Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (which my dd9 LOVES) ,etc.
Now....they will NOT see Mean Girls because it was downright disturbing. No to: Van Helsing ,Underworlds 1&2, Hellboy , Mr&Mrs. Smith, etc because of extreme violence. Also Sixteen Candles, Weird Science , The Breakfast Club are all out as well because of the overly sexual tones ( and nudity).
I agree , up to a point, about religious movies. I am not religious and either is my dh but we EXPOSE religion to our children because we want them too know what OTHER people believe around here and in other countries. We do not want them to be religious because that is what we are ( if we were religious that is) and our fathers before us were but because in their heart they believe there is a God. We treat religious movies just like other movies...they are STORIES.
 
Didn't like Shark Tales here either, dh and I viewed it and both agreed, Shrek is another on the list and I wouldn't even consider Napolean Dynamite.
 
I agree that we will not be watching Evan Almighty in this house. I let Samantha watch a lot of all different kidns of movies. She and I have watched some R movies together but some PG's have been worse. I never just let her watch anything though. I must approve and if I don't know anything about it I research it.

If a movie has cursing in it then it depends on how often it is used and what the words are. Any sex is a big NO, NO, NO. Anything scarey is a big NO because I know her and she will have nightmares. Mean Girls? Oh NO ma'am! Spiderman, Pirates, Shrek - they are all okay with me.
 
None of the Shrek movies.
No war movies (even the old ones) althought dh and I do watch them because, even though they are violent, they have awesome history lessons. That, and war is violent no matter how you look at it

Aliens and Vampires are not even allowed in my house.

Napolean Dynamite is one of hubbys favs, but kids don't watch it and I personally find it a waste of my time.

Anything Barbie dh doesn't want dd to even have them

Funny thing is, when I turned 18, some friends rented a R rated movie because now I could watch them.
I still called my parents to see if it was ok.
 
oh yeah, and Harry Potter is out too. We don't even read the books, so that's that!

The Wizzard of Oz (because I just hate that movie!)
 
My parents pretty much used to let me watch whatever I wanted as long as I watched it with them. They would however save me from movies that are a danger to a person's sanity like Teenage Mutent Ninja Turtles 3 and Friday the 13th.
 
I do allow SOME PG rated movies, that I have seen first. I do not allow movies with se* or nudity AT ALL. I do allow some war movies, just because *I* happen to LOVE them! NO movies with magic or witches in them either. NO movies that make fun of the Bible, either.

so...no Grease, no Little Mermaid (that girl needs to get slapped!), no Harry Potter or anything resembling it,

I am VERY picky about the movies that not only the children watch, but *I* watch as well. If the children can't watch it with us then my husband and I don't need to either.
 
I look at the content over the rating. Ratings can be deceiving.

My kids love many of the classics, so that is fun. Sometimes I think a movie just looks plain stupid, so out of wanting my kids to look to QUALITY entertainment, we ditch some just because they aren't worth the time it takes to watch them.

Personally, I love movies! I get quite irritated by tv, so basically the only screen viewing I do is dvd's (oh yes and my love of reading stuff on the internet...:wink: )

Nellie, what is wrong with Napolean Dynamite? Elijah is having a friend over from church today and he brought over this movie, I had not heard of this movie before. I asked the mother and she said it's just "stupid".
 
It's about nothing in particular, more of a cult movie. I saw it and there's some funny stuff but mostly just kinda dumb.
 
Can I ask what is wrong with Evan Almighty? If it's anything like Bruce Almighty hubby and I will be seeing it. Bruce Almighty actually had a very good message..."let God handle all things and God knows what is best". Tanner is obviously too young for it, but the adults in this house will see it. Don't assume just from previews that it mocks the Bible, because it doesn't. JMO. One of my VERY religious Christian friends wouldn't see Bruce Almighty because he thought it would "mock" the Bible. Then he finally watched it and realized the exact opposite! ;)

We are more like Crystal, although we are a Christian family. We restrict certain things, but we do not overanalyze the content. Tanner has been taught to know what reality and pretend is. He watches Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the cartoon though, NOT the movies) and he is no where near a violent child. It has not ruined him or turned him into a horrible child, because he knows it's fantasy. My daycare kids have all seen Little Mermaid and they don't walk around trying to be Ariel. They like the music and the funny characters. They understand it's pretend.

I would never allow Tanner to watch Grease because of his age, but it is one of my favorite movies. My dream has always been to play Rizzo on Broadway. I use to be a theatre major in college, so I have learned to appreciate other things in movies (like costumes and makeup) and look past some of the content. :)

"Cult classic"...like Grease, Breakfast Club, etc. Something that will remain a favorite forever.
