My grandson read this story at school and we are confused about something. In the story it says that they scraped an animal horn to make a window. Freddy and I think it is a mistake and should be an animal hide. The story was in his school reading book. I was wondering if anyone had the actual book, William's House, and could see if it says horn or hide. Thanks.

There's a way to peel a layer of cow horn thin enough to let light through. I don't know what it is, but there's a way. I think of the old "horn book" of colonial America, where they took a small board and carved a handle, then put a page with the alphabet, numbers, maybe something else, and covered it with a layer of horn to protect the paper. The horn could be seen through, and the child had something to learn from in a day when books could be scarce. So it's possible they did mean horn.

THANK YOU! I know it sounds silly, but this has been driving us crazy! I can't wait for the grandboy to get here so we can talk about this. He had a dentist appointment today, but I get to see him this afternoon. I REALLY appreciate your reply!

My pleasure. Sometimes being a veritable fountain of trivial information comes in handy. Now if I could just figure out how to make money at it! :D
