I think this whole thread is getting out of hand..

I see both sides well, but Crystal mostly, I understand where she thinks she is being attacked.
I think the movie has to be what we want our familes to see and what we like to watch..

I feel if you tell you children there is a Santa, or toothfairy and you let them believe they are princess then you are doing the same thing in a different way.. I think we all look for something in a different way.. if we want to believe this is a bad movie because of witch craft then we do, if you let you children believe in fairy tales then you are showing them things in a different way.. showing them it's ok to believe in that. I don't understand maybe that is why I am so confused too, why do people let there children believe in fairy tales, Santa Claus, toothfairy (who are made up magic people)
but they can't watch Harry Potter and things. I feel if you tell them one lie whats the different. Boy, I am one mix up person, I need some help..

Ok here comes the tomatoes and they will come on strong...hold on

None from me. I think your basic point might be something along the lines of, 'the only power these things have is the power we give it."?

Whether Harry Potter is bad isn't a question of whether it really Is bad but rather what power you're willing to give it over you? Ditto with The Golden Compass?

But why do people say that if you refuse to watch it, you are giving power to it?

That's one thing I do not understand.

I mean, if it is about principal, then aren't you being braver for standing up against something that you disagree with?

Again, this is not about the contents of said movie, or heck any movie I s'pose.

Kris, I agree with you, we're big on Santa and the tooth fairy, here. And I liked Harry Potter as well.

But I cannot seem to get anyone to understand.....
It is not the content of the movie....

I think that maybe for you, it's not the content of the movie? Just a guess. :D

Probably it's just that the content of the movie Is the issue for most of us. It's certainly been the issue in many of the emails and WND reports I've seen to the point where exageration is much too kind a word for what's being claimed about the movie.

However, I respect your reason and I think it's an admirable one.

I think it's not the refusing that gives it the power but the vocal protests. Not all the protests either but some of the more shrill and shallow ones that seem to just be reactionary. A loud cry goes up and a movie that people hadn't been interested in suddenly becomes a media darling.

I think a thoughtful refusal, like yours, isn't the same matter. Neither are well reasoned objections that appear in the press.

I totally get that.
Thanks for saying it.

It reminds me of similar things in the past that have a similar ring to them....

Anyone remember laughing at Tipper Gore for telling us that (In not so many words) our music was of the devil?

No, she did not say that, it was the "Furver" over it all that said that...

Anyway, as an adult with children, I now (GASP) agree with her that parents need help in making choices for their family. (Don't tell anyone I grew up with, they will call me a traitor! hahaha! kidding)

Anyone remember the whole "Back-Masking" fiasco of the 80's? (It was argued that bands wrote only songs that when played backwards would tell kids to kill or to worship the devil... and that when played normal, ofrward that it sub-conciencly entered kids brains)

I remember laughing my rear off at these people who actually thought rock bands had enough brains to somehow come up all that crap.
