I joined a 4-h home school group last year. This year the leader put her kids in school. So because of this, she is now moving the meetings and allowing public school kids to be in the 4-h group.

I know I am being selfish, but I don't like it at all. It was nice to have my kids just be with other homeschool kids.

Good thing it is only once a month.

I s'pose since she's the leader she can do that....but I understand why you'd be disappointed!

Can you start one that is only homeschoolers?

I thought about that and may do it next year. I just don't want to hurt her since this just started this year. I will pray about it.

IMHO, it shouldn't hurt her, since she changed the peramiters of her group to include others that were not part of the group when you joined. I'm guessing that she would understand if you said you were doing a homeschool only one again, because that's what you felt most comfortable with!

I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand how you would feel disappointed! I agree with Deena that you should go for it if you want to start a hs'ers group. Best of luck to you!

I'd be disappointed too! Big time! Actually i'd probably be a little p'od about the whole thing. If I joined a group specifically for hs'ers and then all of a sudden it wasn't anymore I would be mad.

We are part of a Homeschool 4-H group (HEY!!! You can come here, if you want to drive to central Ohio every month!!!). If it were to change I would drop out. That's because we meet on Thursdays during school time. I wouldn't be able to do it if it were to meet during after school hours.

She really should have stepped down and then start one that suits her new lifestyle. Anyway, I think that you should be able to start a new club without hurting her feelings. I think you should discuss it with her first though. I mean homeschoolers and ps parents have different schedules anyway. It may be easier for homeschoolers to enjoy their flexibility for projects, meetings or what have you. She is the one that changed it so she should have considered other people's feelings in the matter. Since she did not she should have expected some to be disappointed. If she is reasonable she will understand.

We have 4H in our schools around here. Don't they do that everywhere?

No. When I was a kid, I never really knew anything about 4-H. Maybe it has more to do with whether or not you live in the city or the country....? I grew up in a city, and always thought it was something that "farm kids" did.

Even after I moved to a small town the only kids who did 4H (outside of school, btw) were also in FFA and owned livestock. My almost non-existent knowledge of 4H tells me that unless you have farm animals, there no reason to join. I mean, how are you going to compete without something to enter, right? I'm sure I'm way off base. I'm just proving the point that most people know nothing at all about 4H.... even people who lived in small towns.

Oh, Amie, 4H is way more than farming. There are clubs here for sewing, raising dogs, rabbits, birds, flowers, you name it. I might look into it for Jeanne next year.
As far as this group in the o.p., I would look at the behavior of the ps kids. If they aren't negatively affecting the group, what's the harm? If all the kids are getting along I'd be content.

We still live in the city. Our club has both city and farm kids. One of our boys got Grand Champioin for his cow (which he kept on his g'pa's farm). Our club has had kids with cows, chicken, goats and rabbits. No horses that I know of! Rachael has done dog training for two years, and is now working on the puppy. They have done sewing projects and cooking projects. We had one boy do a Robotics project. It's SO much more than animals and agriculture!

I think you should look into what it takes to begin your own group and go for it if you can.

We have a few in surrounding cities (within a 5 mile radius were we live and the seem to conflict with our schedules. One group in particular, I talked to the leader, received a packet was really interested in that group because they have a focus on photography and astronomy. They hold their meetings on 3rd Sunday of every month at a local PS. Ok, however the last meeting we were out of town for a wedding that weekend and this Sunday we will be out of town for a birthday party and family pictures. By time we can get to meeting it will be December.

    Exactly!!!

We have a 4H here and we are looking into it. I'm trying to convince hubby to let us raise something fun like sheep ;) (Really I just want to learn to spin wool.. and if I have my own sheep he can't tell me I don't need a spinning wheel...lol)

All my kids do is crafts for 4-H. And community service.

I think I need to get a grip. I think the real reason for being upset is I don't care for the children that are about to join. They are friends of ours (sad I know) and their children are not obedient and boss adults around. They are also very mean and gang up on certain kids. I don't want it to rub off on my children. This is why we have distance our selves from them already.

Am I messed up or what?

I don't think you are messed up either. That would be enough to grind my gear.
