Hi! I'm about to start homeschooling my son. It will either be next week or we will wait until the beginning of school next year. I'm working on my husband to get my oldest son out of public school, but he's resisting (pray he softens towards this!). On friday, my son came home from school with A's and B's on his report card! WOOHOO He came home with a award for being on the A B Honor Roll! WOOHOO He came home with his State skills test results. He was in the 7th percentile for reading/english. NOT WOO! NOT HOO! BADDD!! How can a school put a kid on the honor roll and still be so low at reading? Because he's dyslexic. ANd the school refuses to put him in any intervention, so instead, they make LOTS of accommodations. But no teaching. He's a kid who isn't learning but making great grades. And the principal says he doesn't NEED intervention, because he's doing sooo well with just the accommodations. Do you call 7th percentile doing a GOOD job??? Anyway, I want to pull my son out NOW, but hubby is insisting we meet with them Tuesday and see what they say. In the meantime, I'm researching homeschool stuff, learning as much as I can, and preparing myself. I've never homeschooled, but am excited to do it. Oh, and my 2 other kids will continue to be in public school (for now). If this goes well, maybe I can convince hubby to bring the other 2 home too.
Joyful, everyone has posted mega loads of links here, if you need anyhelp just scream for anyone in here A Huge Welcome (from Tx also ) to the forum
Hi and welcome! Good luck and lots of prayers on your situation with the school - hope that turns out for the best for your family. How old is your son? (Just curious.) I'm in Texas too (there are quite a bit of us on here!) - whereabouts are ya? I'm in Austin... at the moment. Texas is an easy (legally) state to homeschool in! Not much required of ya here, and we pulled my oldest out of the ps after he finished first grade (will be 2 solid years this coming May). Anyway, welcome to the spot! If you have any questions or concerns, this is definately the place to be. Hope to see you around!
Welcome to the Spot! I'm Pam. I have 4 kiddos- ds11, dd8, dd6, & dd4. We are in our 4th year hs'ing. We are also in TX-San Antonio. Praying that you and your hubby can reach an agreement regarding your son.
Welcome. I understand your wanting to pull him now, and I'd be doing the same. But let me say a word for the school. I also understand what they're saying. Your son's dyslexia makes reading for him difficult. NOT IMPOSSIBLE, but difficult. They are more concerned about teaching him coping skills, and that's not a bad thing. Obviously, he's a rather intelligent young man, and is coping very well. Does that mean you should ignore his reading? No. But at the same time, I think you need to learn about what they ARE doing with him in the way of accomadations. For example, are they reading TO him, rather than making him read himself? Our schools still have reading as the number one way of conveying educational information to the students. Between 3rd and 4th grade, there's a BIG switch in that direction! A child starts doing poorly in science and history, not because they can't understand the material, but because they can't read it. If the same material can be presented in another way, the kid can do very well. That's what they are doing for your son. One thing you DON'T want to do is make him hate those other subjects because so much time is spent on reading. It will make him discouraged about ALL his subjects. Don't get me wrong! I STILL thinking bringing him home would be a GREAT choice! www.HeadsUpNow.com is a great place for hs'ing special needs children, though she specializes in ADHD/ADD children. She's got lots of stuff, however, that might be helpful to a dyslexic child, too, or might be able to direct you to a homeschool friendly site that can help.
There is a yahoo group called HeartofReading. It has LOTS of info and is for struggling readers due to dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc. I'm on there too so its not JUST for those but lots of homeschool moms's are there and could offer help and advice with curriculum, etc. I know one spelling that several recommend is All About Spelling. I just got it for 2 of my kids. They aren't dyslexic but it's very hands on and based on phonics & spelling rules which is what I needed for my youngest 2. Hope the week goes well and that hubby can see just how much HSing could help your son....one on one verus one on 20-30. Rhonda C.
Hey y'all! Here in Texas too - near Houston. I'm homeschooling my 2 girls prek and 6th grade and we are in our second year. We love it!
Welcome! I think you will find the support and information that you need in this forum. Feel free to ask questions...I'm a newbie too and everyone has been very helpful! We are in Carrizo Springs, Texas.
Welcome to you as well, SunshineMom! You might want to start a thread introducing yourself - we love meeting newbies and it's possible you'll be missed here. How long have you been hsing, and how old are your kids etc? Glad to have you and hope to chat more with you soon! *going now to look up where Bandera is*
Bandera's close to SA, DaLynn- "Cowboy Capital of the World". We're gonna take a trip there one weekend soon! BTW, welcome, Sunshinemom!
