My dd is almost 9 and seems to be starting the beginning stages of puberty. She is getting some darker body hair and needs to wear antiperspirant now. I also think she really needs to start wearing a bra. Anyway, her foot seems to be growing a size a day, LOL! She is now into a 3 shoe! Is that a normal size for an 8yo? Do you think it's pretty normal for her body to be changing so early. I didn't even start my monthly cycle until I was 13 so I doubt I worried about anything like this stuff at age 8! I mentioned the hair deal at an appt about six months ago and the dr. thought it was normal.

If you have an 8/9 yo girl would you mind sharing with me. I am clueless I guess!

Mom I was just talking to someone else about that the other day. I have a 12 year old almost 13 and she started about that age too. She is very tall and big for her age though. She never started her period till she was older but the hair and things came earlier. She also has very large feet and things. Yes they tell me it's normal now days. She is in a size 8 womens already.

I have a 10 year old and nothing yet from her. Even though she was tell me last night her hermones yes hermones not hormones were getting the best of her.
LOL other then that no sign of anything from her yet.

One lady told me in our homeschool group they are growing up so fast now days and that is true.

They grow up. But, trying to brain wash mine they have to live beside when they get married. Don't know how that will work.

Hang in there Mom it only gets funnier. LOL

I think it just depends on the kid. You may find your husband sister or mother started maturing very early on if you asked them but I would not worry about it. It will all change when God intends it too. LOL

I read an article recently that said that the avg age these days for a girl to enter puberty is about 10- yes 10...so it sounds like she is just on track...it said that 20 years ago the avg for girls was 12 and they are not sure why there has been such a marked decrease in this avg. The avg for boys was 15 and now that is down to about 12. I will see if I can find the article again (though I really have no clue where I read it...). It really hit me and I remember it only because I was SOOO uncomfortable in school when I was younger because I was wearing a bra by the 3rd grade and got my period at the beginning of 4th grade and I was the ONLY one. This was, what, 18 years ago...and now this is the norm???
That being said, our 4 yr old wears a size 12 1/2 shoe...and it is not like she is a giant...our 3 yr old wears a size 11 1/2 or 12 so I can definately see a 8 yr old in a size 3. We also had temp of 2 boys up until very recently and one of them just turned 8 and he (yes HE) was already growing some pubic hair and DEFINATELY needed deoderant.
Anyone found that magic pill to keep them little forever yet?? If so, I need 4 of them and QUICK! They grow up far too quickly...

My 9yo boy is small for his age and he is in a size 4 shoe. I know a 9yo girl who wears a size 7 shoe, so three seems very normal to me.....especially since my 6yo dd is in a 2 1/2. And the same 6yo dd has been wearing a bra for about a year if the shirt material is "clingy". I don't like there to be anything at all showing in that area, kwim?

I remember having dark leg and arm hair at that age, not to mention wearing deodorant and a bra by 8yo, too. Just look at it this way....she might just be blessed with a healthy bossom later ;). I started when I was about 11, though, so there still was some lag time between the hair, BO and period.....and my feet are still big. :-?

My two girls are 11 and 9. Their birthdays are close, so I take them in together for their yearly checkups. Neither has started yet, though I'm going to be taking the oldest for a bra soon.

The last time I went to the doctor's, she looked at my YOUNGER daughter, felt around her breast area, and informed us that she wasn't too far behind her sister, and they would BOTH be starting at about the same time!!! I was ready for the older, but NOT the younger!!! (I asked, half serious) if there was anything as far as diet I could do to postpone it a while in her, LOL! (NOPE!!!) She did say they might be a year apart. My cousin's daughter started her period at age 9.

As stated earlier, girls seem to be starting earlier. I am told that this is due in part to the large amounts of hormones in our meat.

I have to say I was 9 years old when I started. I was wearing 34C bra at that age also.
I am praying that Vicki doesn't follow her Moma's footsteps.

    Missy,
Ashley is 11 now, and she started getting her period in March.
I have found in my experience with her that they start all the other stuff (that you mentioned) first, but the underarm hair seems to come last- right before the period. She had pubic hair for awhile, but it wasn't 'til we saw those first underarm hairs that the period started not long after. :-?
Once Ashley reached about the age of 9, her feet took off- we could barely keep her in shoes! She's still kinda that way. She's wearing mostly a women's size 8 now. I only wear a 9 or 9 1/2, so I'm not looking forward to her wearing my shoes!
I look at her and can hardly believe how big her breasts are getting! We just bought a pack of 34 bras at Wal-mart (they're the sports type)- she much prefers the comfort of them over the regular style that hooks in the back, and I much prefer the fact that they flatten her out a bit! I just don't like it that she's only 11 and is becoming such a well-developed young thing! Scary!
Yes, it's true, they start much younger now!
Hopefully you'll have a ways to go before the period begins, but it sounds like Avery is well on her way!

When my oldest daughter (she will be 15 on Sunday) was in 4th grade and we were at her annual checkup, our doctor said girls are starting their periods as early as 8 now. I just can't imaging explaining all this to an 8 yr old. Sure glad my girls didn't start that early.

Well, I certainly appreciate all the responses. I hope her period doesn't start for a long time. I hated it and thought everyone KNEW when I was having it! I was 13 though. So, I knew that it was coming. My best friend didn't get hers till she was 15!!! Lucky her, lol! Avery's shoe size seems so big but I only wear a 7 so I guess that is why. I can't imagine her already wearing ladies shoes. I guess it's coming though. I'm so sad to see my little girl grow up!

My Jeannie is getting darker hair on her legs and arms recently.
My problem with her is her long torso. Sometimes I need to go into the jr department to get her shirts so they'll be long enough.

Becky, I hear ya! It would have been hard enough to find long shirts for my dd, but now that the styles have changed to bare midrifs again it is virtually impossible to find clothes that fit appropriately. Glad I'm learning to make alterations myself.

I'm glad I know how to sew! So far, I really haven't needed to, but it's getting more and more difficult to find acceptable dresses for Rachael.

I saw in a homeschooling catalog/magazine that they have these shirts for sale- to be worn under today's inappropriate shorter styles. The two-layer thing seems to be in anyway, so they have these long, under-layers for sale. I thought it was kinda a good idea. I just find myself, like the rest of you, buying a bigger size for Ashley. Junior clothing runs tiny anyway, so sometimes we even have to buy her a large! (depending on brand) It's ridiculous really.
As for Gracie- she's tiny but tall. It's very hard to find clothing that fits her. I'm glad she's finally old enough to be out of toddler clothes, because now we can find slims for her.

    Heidi,
Vicki has the problem Gracie does. Vicki is getting a heiney on her also. Her heiney is filling out. It is killing her daddy. Vicki is so slim and getting tall that is hard to find clothes for her. Dresses I really have to watch because they will be up to her heiney. I don't let her wear clothes that have stuff written on the heiney or stuff that shows her stomach. I just don't feel that is right. Shorts are also hard to find because they get to short in a hurry.

Yes, Trish~ that sounds like Gracie.
I just had to get rid of some of her little shorts that were 18-24 month~ they still fit her around the waist, but were looking a bit short~ didn't want her looking like a little floozy!
Certain jeans~ I've found Bongo brand~ tends to run rather slender and fit her well. Otherwise, I need to look for slims, or the ones that have the adjustable waistband.

My dd is 8. She hasn't started any of that stuff yet. I can't imagine an 8 yo in a size 34 bra! Yikes! I didn't start until I was 14, all my other friends had strated at least two years before me, so I wasn't too happy about it............until later. Wish I would've appreciated not having it while I had the chance!!! I'm hoping my dd takes after me in when she starts, but not for the cramps. I had terrible cramps. One time we were visiting my aunt and I started, and they got so bad, and nothing was even touching the pain. She gave me codeine finally, and that was the only thing that eased it. I was also very irregular, so could never plan on when it would start.

My dd wears a size 1 shoe, moving toward a 1 1/2. I am 5'9" and wear a 7 1/2 or 8 shoe, so I hope she takes after me---there's a lot more to choose from in those sizes. I say that, cuz I DO NOT want her to take after my mom! She wears a size 11 narrow! It's interesting, cuz she has a friend that is 4 months older than her who is TINY! She is at least a head shorter than my dd (and my dd is on the short size for her age group), and wears a CHILD size 9 or 10! Then, my dd's friend across the road from us is 1 1/2 months younger than my dd and is at least a head TALLER than my dd, and wears a woman's size 5 or 6! Each child is so different!

Shoe sizes drive me bananas! I had to get Jeanne a size 1 in Nike, but all the other brands have her at 11 1/2 or 12.

Her brother is a trip to get shoes for. He has stopped, so far, at 14EEE.
