I am not a "skirts only" person, but I do respect the idea. Anyhow, we went out to eat tonight and there was a HUGE family of "skirts only" folks. There was a mother, a few teen girls, and a variety of female kids. Every single one of them (including the teens and the mom) had visible pants on under their skirts. A couple of them were wearing jeans but most had on sweat pants.

    So, here's my question....

Isn't the point of a woman only wearing skirts/dresses to NOT wear pants? I mean, how is wearing a skirt over pants (which looked terrible, btw) more feminine than just wearing pants?

Odd. Kind of doesn't make sense to me. Why bother then with the skirt? I'm confused on that one. On younger kids I can understand in a way...children aren't very modest sometimes. LOL But on grown children who know how to sit proper, and for an adult...I don't get it.

Maybe they only wear skirts because its req'd by their church, etc and don't necessary agree with it?? OR may its because its freezing out??

I'm assuming its freezing in MO today since its freezing here in VA and we got your recent weather:lol:

Interested to hear other opinions (as you may have guessed I barely wear skirts to church...I'm a jeans/t-shirt gal myself but totally respect those who chose skirts)

Weather...hadn't thought of that. That's a good possibility. Hum... If someone was that determined and convicted to wear skirts all the time though I wonder why they'd think jeans would be ok "under" the skirt and not without a skirt though. I mean, kind of seems contradicting to the conviction, if that is what it is. I don't know though, I'm not a skirts only gal and that may be why I don't understand. I'm interested to hear other opinions as well to shed some light on it.

Was it cold Amie? If it is, I think I may be leaning towards the weather answer. Makes sense...more or less like leg warmers "back in the day". LOL

I live in an area where there is a large number of faiths in which women and girls wear dresses or skirts only. In the winter, it is too cold to be running around without something substantial on your legs, so they will wear pants or long johns under their skirts. I think that the skirts are more for modesty than femininity. Pants reveal too much of the female form in their opinion. The other issue, in our area at least, is conformity. There is a desire to not be different or draw attention to oneself in a way that might promote vain thoughts. There's two possibilities -- another possibility is that they are just forward-thinking fashionable ladies who are setting the next trend. I've seen worse fashion fades in the past thirty years than skirts and sweats!

Why pants? I thought that was why they make nylons and tights. That is what I do and I live where it is very cold and wear skirts often.

I looked at a school for Jeannie where girls were expected to wear dresses each day with shorts underneath for recess and gym.

I'd assume that the pants underneath were to serve a temperature or modesty problem, as already mentioned.

And no, feminenity is not (in my opinion) the main reason for wearing the skirts. For us,, and most people I know, it is the issue of not showing off the form. When I wear jeans outside the home, I am allowing others to see too much of me, that is for my husband ony.

But if it is cold and windy outside, Iwill have on something underneath to protect from the temperature, or the fear of the wind blowing up my skirt.

And more often than not, I could care less how feminine or fashionable I look! hahaha! I am very big on COMFORT! hahaha!

When I was a student at Oral Roberts, we would joke about "Dress-Up" days. No, it wasn't a day when everyone dressed especially nicely. It was one of those Oklahoma days "where the wind comes sweeping o're the plains....." as the song puts it. We would grab our skirt on one side, and pull it way across to the other as we walked across campus!

Hmmmm...... I am "skirts only" and that just seems bizarre to me. Even if it was really cold I wouldn't dress like that 1) because it would look stupid and 2) I don't own a pair of pants!! Leg warmers, tights, maybe even long johns I could understand wearing if it was really cold. Most of my friends who have little girls will sew shorts under their skirts or at least have them wear shorts under their skirts so the girls can run and play without worrying about their skirts flying up, I can understand that. But jeans?? That's just crazy, I can't imagine it would be very comfortable either!!

Now I'm really confused. The women that I know who are members of "skirts only" churches site the verse that tells women not to dress like men. I had no idea that the whole "seeing too much of the female form" was even an issue. I'm intrigued.... mostly because I wonder why "seeing too much of the male form" is a non-issue??? I mean, most women I know are 'butt gals'. And often there is the issue of seeing 'the package' when a man wears jeans or slacks. So shouldn't that be a modesty issue for men, too?

Personally, I'd love to attend church with a room full of men in kilts (and no, that wasn't a joke).

I am not a skirts only sort of person but I do belong to a church where modesty is a big deal. I wear pants but do not wear tight fitting pants. I'm more concerned with what I am thinking about people when I go out, not what they are thinking about me. If they are being immoral in thought then that is their problem not mine. That said I do believe that women shouldn't be walking pornography like they are here in Arizona during the summer (which lasts 7 months!). Holy Cow, the things they wear!

When my dd was in ps there were several families that were "skirts only" and I would not have realized there was a difference in what was allowed under the skirt except we went on a field trip to the NC mts. Our trip was in March so they warned us there was the possibility of snow. For the one little girl, it wasn't a problem as she was allowed to wear pants or sweats under her skirt. The other child, on the other hand, was NOT allowed to wear anything. We had asked her about thick leggings and she said that wasn't acceptable. The teacher ended up talking with the mom and the girl was able to wear thick leotards. Thank goodness the weather turned out to be mild!

Oddly enough, pants-under-skirts was a fashion craze here with the 11-15ish age group for a while....dd11 took it up for a bit and I just shook my head and said nothing....how could I, remembering the cut-off-one-leg jeans craze that went through one of my junior high schools.

(If she's gonna follow a fashion craze, better that it was this than micro-mini's and such - which I wouldn't allow anyway ;) )

(I know that this wasn't the issue here, but it made me think of it because for a while there were young girls running all over town with pants - jeans in particular - under skirts here)

Maybe they did it for warmth, yea you said it was 68 but maybe it was cold for them. Maybe they were at a out door active that need something under there shirts to play and just came to eat out afterwards. I am sure they have a reason for it.

:?:Because women have more control over their eyes and imagination than men do:?:

As for the kilts idea, my husband has said in the past that he'd like that. Though, I can only imagine the show he'd give his co-workers, because of the way he sits!

The way MOST men sit! (And you know that supposedly they wear NOTHING under thier kilts!!!) I can't imagine that being a very modest attire unless they are careful!

I am totally not skirts only but I have friends that are. They dont' even own one pair of pants. Like someone said they quote the verse that says women and not to dress like men but also because as someone else said they don't think it is modest and shows the shape of their legs which they do not believe is right. So for these women to even own a pair of jeans but be "skirts only" is really bizarre to me. My friends say they will wear thick tights or long johns but never pants.
