I think I'm going to be watching a girl from church next year! She's 5, and her mom would LOVE it if I homeschooled her. Seeing as how we don't have to report school here until they're 8, what I'd do would just be part of the day care program with her. Wow, so I'd be teaching her to read and all! I'm kind of excited! It's funny though---I've been passing by the "teaching my child to read, what programs are best, etc.", since my youngest is 11 and we're long past that. Now I guess I need to do more research into it! They'll pay us for day care. She'll be here from about 7:30am to 5:30 or so pm! See? Quite the change to our schedule! The girl's mom called me yesterday morning to ask me about it. I told her I would of course have to talk to my dh and we'd need to discuss it and see. When my dd found out, she got all excited! "Mom, it'll be like having a little sister! PLEASE do this!" And my husband said that the little extra it would bring in would be helpful for our finances! And I'm thinking it would help keep me on my toes more, not spending too much time on the computer! So wow, I need to readjust my thinking and see how to work up a little program for her! Any comments, ideas, etc. are welcome! Now you can throw the advice back at me!
Yeah! Deena that sounds like a wonderful thing! I have had a few friends ask me about it but none have actually gone through with letting me take thier kids except in summer months. I was thinking of one of my friends daughters who is prego the other day and am planning to offer my services for taking care of the baby during the day for her while she works. I would love a kindergardener though! How cool! and what a great way to keep the inspiration after all the years you have been teaching your kids! I find that the more then do on thier own the less fun it is for me lol. But I know you will be so into schooling while teaching a 5 yr old! How fun! Don't forget Dick and Jane!
Oh yeah, Krista, STARFALL! I've heard of that a million times, but have never been there, since it came about after my last one. NOW I need to head there! Thankyou for the reminder! Free is good!!! TMom, you really think Dick and Jane is good? I so remember those from when I was little! Where do you get those now? If this does go through, I'll need to see what this little girl is "into" and try to have books and things that will truly interest her!
I think that is wonderful news! I am sure you will do great. For reading we used the Wonderbook series (leveled readers). Many public libraries carry them.
Deena, with my oldest we used CLP and it worked fantastic. My next one didn't like it but she loved dick and Jane, she will read them by herself all the time. I also used Bob books from the library. I found dick and jane at a local bookstore that I love. I have also seen them at CBD. Check with your library as well ours has them. I am so excited for you.
We use the book teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and we love it! My boys can already read some words and they've only done about 24 or so lessons. They are doing a great job and the book is just wonderful it makes everything so simple. We don't do the writing sounds exercises though because they confuse the boys since they have another handwriting program.
I'd try to spend some time with her first and evaluate what she already knows before you develop a "plan" otherwise you might just be spinning your wheels.
Gosh...Deena! What a lucky mom to have YOU watching/teaching her daughter! You are going to be such a blessing to her! Here's a site that both my dd like (ages 7 and 4). Someone posted here a few months ago--it's a great site. You do have to register, but I don't ever get spam from them. In fact, I don't think I've heard from them except to get the password, lol! http://www.literactive.com/Home/index.asp
wow buddy what a change but look it could be fun. You all can help her read and all the fun things that go with it. Have fun. P.S. Hay I will trade you the 5 year old for my MIL
I second, Birbitt. I used 100EZLessions for my daughter starting at 3yo and we also skipped the writing sounds for the same reason. Starfall.com is great as well. Unfortunately (?) for us we, found it after she could read most everything there.
I think you will have an awesome time! I am so glad that this little girl will have the opportunity to spend so much time with your family! All kids should be in a daycare that wonderful. Wish I lived closer! LOL.
How fun, fun, fun!!! Of course, we're doing K with two this year - my ds5 and my niece A5. So this is off the top of my head.... I looked at 100ez lessons before and didn't like it. Instead, I hope to obtain The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading (Bauer). We might supplement with Explode the Code books, if we can afford them. (We is collective with SIL and I.) Starfall is excellent and we use it as well, as visual supplementing to whatever our regular curriculum will be. I think it's a fun reinforcement, but I'm just uncomfortable relying on it as a complete curriculum. Might could be done, though. Do you have any idea where she is in her literacy? There's always Letter of the Week, and don't forget about Hubbard's Cupboard. Also, we're loving Math-U-See Primer at this age. Really. It's like Rod & Staff for math. (R&S math is good, too, but we like the blocks and the format of it. Mine are visual-kinesthetic so that makes a difference.) Other than that, we're doing themes - there's a whole Kindergarten thread floating around here somewhere. Tiffany asked for themes, I listed mine (one a week from August through May, skipping holiday seasons here and there) and then Ami came and linked what is related at HSS! It's an awesome thread - go read it! So, here's what we're doing: Phonics - OPGTR, plus maybe ETC Math - MUS Primer Science, social studies, music, art, etc - themes (or you could do something like FIAR; we like more books) Bible - Heart of Dakota (HOD: See their site for placement, because it also includes maths and science and phonics/letter study; we may end up nixxing it, partly because the book I have will not end up being the right level for us after all. HOD is very similar to Hubbard's Cupboard for the slightly older or more advanced set.)
Dalynn what is heart of dakota? We are still looking for a Bible curriculum and in the mean time we are making our own but I'd really rather have one already done because some of our stuff is hard to find activities and such for online.
What a wonderful opportunity for both you and the little girl! It sounds like your daughter will also make a "great teacher" - possibly a reading/study buddy! It is a unique opportunity for her, too.
Sounds like fun & how cute is your dd!!! I bet she'll be a help as well!!! http://www.learningpage.com/free_pages/home.html free worksheets!!! Just register & I don't remember getting junk either just a confirmation.
