My dryer went out and I'm looking for a new one and probably a washer too. Mine is 14 years old and doesn't work very well. I've checked Menards, Home Depot and Sears. They are all about $1700 for the pair - just an average model:shock:. Does anyone know of any other stores that I should try that would be alot cheaper?

Our Kmart carries name brand washers and driers. The prices were a lot less than Sears and Home Depot.

The scratch and dents for Sears carry display models that have a small scratch or a dent for much less. For the life of me, though, I don't remember what you would find that as in the yellow pages; I just knew where the store was in Atlanta. We always called it the "scratch and dent" store, LOL. That's where we got our first washer and dryer, about 6 years ago, for somewhere around $200 (maybe less, it's been awhile) for the pair. A very basic set, mind you. But they carry all sorts of models, and usually the dents are minimal or barely noticable.

Best Buy often has open box specials. I got my washer for about $150 less than cost by buying open-box. Lowe's, Sears, and Home Depot were all higher than Best Buy when I was looking. But if you watch for sales, you might get a better deal at one of those places. I second looking for scratch-and-dents, too. All the major chains usually have something with minor flaws to sell.

Last week I went into Best buy and out of curiosity checked the washer and dryer prices. For the most basic of models the dryer was a little over $300 and the washer was I think $299. The more expensive ones were around $1700 I think.

Last year my mom was told to buy hers online from Sears and it would be cheaper. It was, she saved about $500 dollars (she bought a washer, dryer and refrigerator)

Hold of if you can until one of them has a discount, like $10-15% off, We bought ours at home depot because they had a free (rebate) delivery, they had the same W/D at sears but they had 15% off, home depot price matched...... so we got the best deal.

Our city also has a "scratch and dent" place....... but they just didn't have any good deals at the time we looked, but worth checking out.

We just bought a Samsung front loader set, that can stack for $900 for the pair at Sears about a month ago. It was a special sale.

Samsung has some amazing reviews, they were a high priced product, but due to ONE machine having a problem, they recalled all of them and now that they are back out they are on the very affordable side. The set should have been $1500 if not on sale. I LOVE it!!!

I will say that after we went through a huge ordeal with our front-loader and used 3 different repairmen, I absolutely do not recommend the Frigidaire. We bought the mid-grade Frigidaire set. The dryer had to be fixed within the first 3 months (under warranty), and the washer broke after 18 months. All 3 repairman said to never buy Frigidaire washers and dryers again. One said front-loaders aren't necessary for clean clothes, but just a fad (I did love mine!!), but that if you just have to have one, buy Whirlpool. They are the best. I was told that as more companies started making the front-loaders, the quality has come way down, and they are VERY expensive to fix. (We stopped trying at just under $300.)

We got ours the Sunday before the Black Friday sales, they had a friends and family night. We had to wait 3 weeks for delivery, and ours was dead.. we have to have a stack and the one we had was all one piece, the dryer went nuts and threw sparks so I made hubby throw the whole unit out the back door..lol. The wait SUCKED, I had to take laundry to my MIL's house for 3 weeks and we do at least a load a day in this house! But I totally cherish this washer and dryer.... oh and they sing to me!!! I love it...lol.

Wanted to respond to Pam... honestly, my clothes are coming out wwwwaaaayyyy cleaner now. I don't have near the perminate stains I had with the top loader... oh by the way my original stack unit was a 4 year old fridgedaire that we paid $1200 for. Back on track, they do recommend you use the HE detergent, I found purex for 3 or 4 bucks for 31 loads, which is in my budget... I don't use nearly as much detergent or fabric softener with the front loader... and my clothes smell much better.

Oh, I agree, Sommer, my clothes smelled MUCH cleaner with the frontloader!! I LOVED it, but unfortunately, we spent almost $300 trying to fix the one we had, and it wasn't in the budget to buy a new one. So, we went with a clearanced top-loader. We did use HE detergent, and even though it costs more, I used so much less that I still spent less in detergent. Something computerized went out on ours.

One day I hope to have another one, but it will not be a Frigidaire ($1400 for the set)! My parents have one of the first FL's released, a Kenmore from Sears, and haven't had a single problem with theirs.

Well I guess I will try to avoid fridgedaire. I really like the LG but not the price. I'm going to wait until after Christmas and hopefully they have some better sales before the first of the year. My washer still works and our basement floor is heated so I just hang the clothes up and their dry in about 3 hours. I just don't want this to be a permanent thing. A girl needs her dryer.

If you can wait until tax season starts, you may be able to get a better deal.

I loved the LG red ones, but they were WAAAAYYY out of my price range!!

I lived all summer without our dryer, I hung everything outside. We live in a trailer, so no where inside to hang. The heating element went in our fridgedaire, and we waited until we could no longer hang out to replace the element, but for some reason it went haywire and started sparking and carrying on when we tried to do a test run, so out the door it went, I wasn't going to risk my house over clean clothes.

We bought ours from Home Depot. I think just shopping around to see who has the best deal. Maybe they would be having a lot of holiday sales this time of year...

Sears! That is always where my dad bought his from and they lasted for ever!
Kenmore brand.. plus they give a lot to charity !
not that you would get it for free but I think a company that gives as much as it does must be doing something right!

I have to agree with the Kenmore brand from Sears. I've had mine for almost 7 years and they are still going strong with no repairs (knock on wood). A friend of mine with a top loader he machine hates hers. And wishes she never bought it, she feels her clothes don't come out clean enough and that it tears her clothes up. She gets rather upset by it. Good luck finding a good machine that fits your budget.

Check Craig's list.......Sometimes you can find top of the line machines for a fraction of the cost. Or you may be able to pick up just a drier for a couple hundred bucks that will hold you over until you can get what you really want.
