Yesterday afternoon, I was trying to figure out what was on, so I could find something for ds to watch. It was about 4:30pm. I turned on the TV Guide Channel to see what was coming on next, and had to have ds leave the room. They were showing scenes from Rock of Love (or whatever the show is called), the 'reality' dating show with the lead singer of Poison. So, all they're showing is these barely dressed bimbos bouncing around the screen. They showed a shot where he was kissing 4 of them at one time, a scence where 2 were bouncing up & down rubbing together, plus there was the scene where 2 were fighting (one almost fell out of her shirt & if the other had moved the right way, her shorts would've become thongs). There wasn't one woman on there that was dressed in semi-decent clothing.
Anyway, I had to send ds out of the room, so that I could see what was coming on next on the few channels we get, because I simply didn't feel this trash was appropriate for a 5 year old. I was so angry about it, I actually emailed them to complain. There's just no excuse for showing stuff like that in the middle of the day, when young children could accidentally be exposed to it.
Now, if I had turned on the channel that show's actually on, and it was on or therre was a commercial for it, that would be one thing. However, the TV Guide Channel shoud be able to be turned on without having to worry that your kids are going to see someone fall out of the 4in piece of fabric they're calling a shirt.
I'm not the only who would get irritated about this right?

Most satellite companies offer parental controls.

I think the original poster's point was that she was checking the programming guide to see what was on.

    Maybe you can check online?

I rarely let my kids watch anything in real time anymore. I record it, or they watch a DVD, or I stream from Netflix. I used to let them watch on Joost, too, but I haven't had time lately to watch and check what commercials they're doing. They used to be all right. I want to try hulu.com for the same reason. But until I clear it, forget it.

Exactly! Parental controls would have not allowed such a show to appear on the screen!

We also have a separate channel for our guide.

If you have basic cable then you don't have parental controls. There is a channel you can tune to that scrolls a viewing guide. The show clips of shows during the scroll. I think that's what the OP meant.

And parental controls - at least when we had digital - would not block the channel with the viewing guide on it.

I usually check the list at TV guide.com to find out what's coming on.

And OP, I don't think you are over reacting. That's something I don't care to see - nor do I want my boys seeing it.

I remember a time when my grandma would flip her lid if she seen an advertisment of a woman in a bra and these were sketches too.LOL
...and I am talking about those bras that covered all your breast and then some. What would she think of what we see today?!

We have the smallest cable package we could get. We have channels 2-6 & 14-22. That's it. It doesn't come with Parental Controls. We don't even have a cable box. The only reason we even got it was because it was the only way to get good reception on our local channels & it gives us 2 PBS stations (plus, the fact that we only pay about $8 a month) . We watch more DVDs than actual TV, with the exception of PBS for the kids & a few shows dh & I watch at night. We figure, if there are shows on other channels (Discovery, History, etc.), we can have someone else record them for us, or we can find them on DVD at the library. So, there's really no point in paying for so many channels, when we won't watch 90% of them.
My problem was that this was the TV Guide Channel, the only channel we have that shows what's on all the channels. So, I guess I'll just have to stick to checking online. I used to have the schedule for PBS memorized (at least for the shows the kids watch), but they've recently changed it, again. So, I wasn't sure what was coming on.
I think I'll just print the PBS schedules & check weekly to see if the shows dh & I watch are on & new.
I just think it's ridiculous that you can't even find out what's on TV with possibly subjecting your kids to something that's completely inappropriate.

I know exactly what Brandi is talking about. The programing guide our cable company shows on our channel 12 has a box at the top of the screen that shows things while the program guide is running below it. Some of the things they show in that box are really not what I would want my 10 year old to see.

I so agree! We have parental controls on our satellite box, but so many of the programs are NR, which slips right on through.

One could always keep the channel on a G rated channel to check the tv guide.

Our channel guide doesn't work that way. You don't have a choice about what it shows at the top of the screen. You turn to channel twelve and the guide is moving at the bottom 2/3 of the screen while the top 1/3 shows whatever the cable company has on. There isn't any way to just see the programing guide.

Our channel guide doesn't show anything at all. Only a small picture in picture type thing at the bottom of the screen of whatever show you are watching at the time.

I do totally understand and feel the same way about crap like that on in the middle of the day.

Thats why we only have an antenna - cbs, nbc, abc & pbs. That's it, and even those channels have ALOT of garbage that I don't even care to watch, not to mention allow my children to watch. But come February I will probably be one of the many left in the dark with no tv because even though I have the converter box we still won't know if we get reception until they go full strength. It will be back to the days when everyone use to talk to each other rather than glued to the tv, lol. (we actually don't watch much tv)

Lee, I'll be right along side with you! The Cable company would call to get me to sign up, and I would interrupt them, asking, "And why should I actually PAY MONEY for something that will help divide my family?" That usually shut them up pretty quickly, lol! (We don't even have our converter box yet, though Carl FINALLY sent in for the Government coupon!)

You are not alone, and The letter you write to them may be the one letter they need to add to the pile to make their pile big enough to make a change in policy.... Remember the drop in the bucket theory?

So write a strongly worded letter to the channel, or whomever.

Now, we are blessed enough to have full satellite tv.
I say blessed because not only does it come with parental controls that are VERY detailed.
Also, we have the ability to record everything.
And finally, and most importantly, are the channels and quality of programming that is out there for education.

This is almost a golden era, in educational programming on satellite tv. I have had regular local channels, cable and satellite and have never seen so many wonderful opportunities, as there are now.

I could not use our TV if we were just local channels.... I would be JUST LIKE YOU, so I completely agree with you...... It is like allowing the kids to "Hang out" at Houston main bus terminal. not gonna happen... So I understand where you are coming from.

But if you have the ability to get satellite, I recommend it for the educational aspect. I actually gave up smoking as a part of an argument to help pay for the satellite... it it not the cattelist to quit, but it helped pay for it.

We have SOOOOO many lessons we spring off from, or supplement from the visual variety on our channel line ups. We're talking real lessons, like the Assignment Discovery films that run for an hour and are actually the films we see in school, about math, science, history, grammar, etc...

So don't know ALL of broadcasting.

I also have channels blocked that they do not see at all. And they have their own profile on the satellite... meaning, if they want to watch tv, they watch THEIR channel line up.

When we want to watch tv, the adults know the passcode for their channel line up.

my point is, not all tv is bad, in fact (And yes it is true for most things, ) The more you pay for, the better it actually gets.

In fact, Satellite will be the LAST thing to go, when we cut funds or have to save money. We use it that much for education.

Rabbit ears are not an option here any longer. We were among the first to make the switch to digital broadcasting last fall. There are no more signals to pick up on rabbit ears. It's basic cable or satellite.

You cannot control what is on the tv guide channel. They show whatever they want to in the area above the schedule. I don't have the patience to wait for the slow scroll so I used an online guide.

We had basic cable and chose to cancel our cable altogether. We have found that we do have more family time and we don't have to worry about what might show up. We do get movies and such from the library. I can't stand the swearing in some of the movies rated PG. I have looked into a TV Guardian (it takes out the swearing), but can't find anywhere in our area. Does anyone know where I can purchase one of these.

Our satellite service is the basic-no frills-bottom of the barrel plan, but we do have parental controls.

We have bottom of the barrel also--with NO parental controls! Our TV Guide channel also shows whatever it shows, we have no control over that. :( Interesting how that changes depending on where you are! Wish they'd ALL allow for parental controls and cutting out the guck they show on the TV Guide channel!!!
