Hello, I took Nathan (2 weeks od) to the doc yesterday and he is loosing weight instead of gaining. I was totally shocked, he seems healthy and is nursing like crazy. I have overactive let down, and over supply issues so that really was a shock to me. He is spitting up and I am pretty sure that is the problem. We just need to find out why he is spitting up so much. But the doc has me nursing every 2 hours (with an alarm clock) and has me switich side each feeding. Which if you know about OALD it will for sure cause me to get engorged again. So I have been really only switich sides ever 4 hours instead of 12 like I normally do (with the other 2 kids) Also Last night while I was up my other two kids woke up and vomited at the same time. Repeatedly. all over But I do have a great husband who has cleaned up and taken care of the older two kids. Me and the baby are quarentinned to one room. Also a long story short dh gave his two week notice at work about 3 months ago for feb, and they are trying to make it hard for him to take time off to stay with me and the baby.he was planning on using his sick leave and vacation time to get our small business making more money before he quit. HE does get to use it today thought!!! it is like God's revenge...as long as the baby doesn't get it we will be good to go. Thanks for the prayers and support I know that I will get from you ladies. Aggie
Most mothers have a better sense for what's going on than even the best doctor could. Between you, your dh, and your doctor, I'm praying you'll discover if there's anything serious with your little one. I pray you'll all recover good health real soon and that the issues with your husband's job will be resolved in a fair manner. I pray that the nursing will soon stabalize into a totally enjoyable experience. 'Praying many blessings for your family!
If you have oversupply issues and a fast let down, then baby is most likely getting too much too fast and is the cause of the spitting up. I would try pumping for 10 minutes on each side before feeding. That should get rid of the excess that he is getting and eliminate the spitting up. I have over supply issues, and never have a let down, it can just flow non stop. I have had lots of issues with spitting up just for this reason with both of my 2 younger ones (didn't nurse my oldest since I worked 12 hour shifts when he was born.)
If this is the baby's first check-up, he could be gaining now but just hasn't gotten back up to birth weight. It took at least three weeks for my oldest two to get back to their birthweight. Eventually they all took off and had steady weight gain. Praying for you're family.
prayers and (((HUGS))) for you and your family!!! I hope your kids recover quickly, the baby gains weight and hubby's job and small business go well!
Prayers and good thoughts for your family.I hope the baby starts gaining weight soon.I hope your other two feel better, its so awful when one of our children are sick.I hope your business does great too.
I've been absent lately, so I didn't know you had your baby, though I figured you did. I will pray he is fine. I had a friend whose baby did not gain weight in the beginning also. She had to nurse him every 2 hours all day and night. UGH. Anyway...he is HUGE now and perfectly normal.
Thanks for the prayers they worked on the kids!!!!! WEll the older kids are no longer sick, and it doesn't seem like anybody else caught it. I was teasing my husband on Sunday morning that he was going to take the kids to church and get them sick on us. And you know what that is were they caught it at, there were several kids that were sick this week too. I am not sure about the baby. Yesterday he didn't do much but sleep, he was really hard to wake up and didn't nurse well. Today he is awake and nursing like crazy, but he is also spitting up a ton as well. I am not nursing on the clock, that is just to much..the baby wasn't even waking up enough to nurse that often. I would spend 30 minutes trying to get him to wake up, then I would have to do a ton of things to try and keep him awake enough to nurse. He seems to wake up and nurse on his own ever 3 1/2 -4 hours. I hope that is the right choice to make, but it was wearing me out. Today he spit up and started choking on it while he was sleeping. It freaked me out, I was in the room so I heard him and went to check on him he was all red, and gagging. I am not going to put him down on his back any more. My dh heard from a guy who used to work with him, and found out that his boss threaten some other shops in the area that he wouldn't give them work if they hired the co worker once he left. ( he was put in prison, it wasn't even a choice the could make) So that makes me think that he would really mess up our business if dh doesn't finish out the current work order he is on. Pretty much mob tactics, with our tax dollars. But on a good note my dad and stepmom are comming down in a few days. It will be nice. I love them so much.
Oh, the poor little guy!!! As long as the baby is nursing every 3-4 hours, I wouldn't wake him to food him. When they nurse less often like that, they USUALLY nurse longer and then go longer. But they're still eating the same amount. When do you go in to your pediatrician again?
Poor little baby, its so scary when they get choked.I hope he starts gaining weight, and letting mom worry less.
I nursed Ems and she lost weight at first. The doctor told me this was normal. The same happened to my niece, but she wasn't nursed. I was told to remove Em's clothes so she would stay awake longer. She always fell asleep while nursing and I had a difficult time keeping her awake. Sometimes she would skip a meal because I couldn't wake her up and when she woke up, once she latched on, she was out like a light again. Keep us posted on your little one!
It is pretty frustrating. I am not sure what to do. His pedi appt is on Monday. Hopefully he will have gained weight and we will get to go on being normal. But if I lay him down after he eats he spits up. Which isn't fun for anybody. Just to clarify he weighted 7 lbs 12 oz at birth then dropped to 7 lbs 8 oz. At 2 days he was reweighted and got to 7 lbs 11 oz. Then at 2 weeks he was at 7 lbs 8 oz again. So he gained then lost again. Which is what the doc was worried about. We will see. I am stopping all dairy products in my diet because my oldest was allergic to it and it caused problems.
I will be praying for you guys. I know how hard it is to try to make the right decision for your kids. It seems like no matter where you turn, everyone has something different to say! If he is spitting up and choking, you could try to have him sleep on his side. They make these little wedge things that you can get at Walmart or Target. That is what I did with mine when they were sick or spitty uppy (is that a word?)
Cannot really give you advice on the breast feeding as I tried 3 time and was never really successful with it. 1st stayed in hospital, so I put her on bottle. 2nd was fine but at 2 weeks I got a kidney stone had surgery and no milk put up so he went on bottle. 3rd was not gaining weight so at 4 month ped dr put him on bottle. I will keep you and baby in prayers. It is so scary when they are that young and you don't know what the problem is.
That was actually a good idea that someone gave for pumping a few minutes before putting him on the breast. That way, it won't be so much of a let-down and he will get more hind-milk which is thicker and has more calories in it.
don't forget that babies go throught the growth spurt and sleep a lot at one time....... I wouldn't worry about the every 2 hour things, he'll let you know when he is hungry....... maybe you might want to try a bottle to see how much he is actually intaking (I know that confuses him..... but it will help you)..... I hope you have a good breast pump.
If he throws up when you lay him down it is most likely reflux. This can be helped a bit by geting him to eat less more often, and also keeping him upright for 20 minutes after he eats. Make sure while you are nursing he is almost upright, kind of sitting on your lap workst the best. Another thing, remember that scales are different, if the first two or 3 weights were in the hospital on their scale, and then he was weighed on the drs scale it is most likely different.
