Ok.. I know I'm not the only one who uses netflix for school.

Really the possibilities are endless that you can get from them. Some of my favorites are:

Preschool: Any of the Leapfrog videos.. yep they have them!

Math: The Standard Deviants, Basic Math, and there are some that are just called like "Geometry" and "Algebra 1". There are also many for younger kids.

History: There are TONS of documentries! You name it it's there. We just watched Into the West for school this year.. so don't think it has to limited to doccumentries and specifically educational programs.

Science.. I think there are some Chemistry videos, and some other science ones as well. You can also find some documentries that are science related, and I think the Standard Deviants have some as well.

They have a section that is titled education.. look through it and then look elsewhere too.

They have Liberties Kids, and Magic Schoolbus. I'm hoping someday they will get the Mr. Wizard videos.. if I don't crack and buy them before that... I LOVED him!!

I use netflix as well! LOVE it! We've gotten some neat documentaries, although I've noticed it's a mixed bag. Some stuff we received was great and others was not. I've learned not to plan my lessons around the DVDs unless I've previewed it first!

We choose videos that have to do with the time period we are studying this gives the kids a chance to see what it looked like pretty much. We did a US history series through it for US History as well! LIBERTY is the name, I forget how many there are in all but it does constitution studies and everything! We have the book as well but we barely broke the book open once the dvds came! It goes through the book!

I am so excited to learn about this! We have netflix, one dvd out at a time... we may have to up the numbers of dvds out if it's going to be a good school resource.

Question, is there any way to determine appropriate age levels for the netflix dvds? I'd love to get some, but I don't want things that are way to old for my elementary age kiddos.

They all have the ratings thing.

I'm not picky about what my kids see... they know that just because they see it on the television it's not necessarily right in our home.

You can find many through the special interests genre.. and also through the childrens. Did you know there is a disney series about the world?

They also have a series called : Geography Tutor.
    I really like that one!!

If you click on GENRES, they have a section called HOMEWORK HELPERS.
They have History, Geography, Science, Languages, Math, you name it!!!

I use Netflix all the time because I don't like to spend alot of money on extra schoolwork stuff ( like videos).

Some of the titles you can view online also so no need to have them shipped to the house!

ok Ladies, we been thinking about doing this we go to use the library now and do have trouble finding alot of that stuff. I have a couple of question how much is a month? How many movies can you have out at once? If you can only do 1 at time that isn't worth it for us?

We just started getting netflix again last month...we had it had several years ago as well. We pay $14 a month to get two DVDs at a time. You can also watch quite a few movies and tv shows on their website for free. We're getting ready to cancel our cable to save some money this summer so I'm really glad we'll at least have some movies coming in.

I have been doing Netflix on and off for years (I just put it on hold for a month or so every few months) but we do a lot of the play instantly too and seems there are a lot of educational ones and my son and I have watched a few. I don't know who all gets the instant view but we only do the 2 movies at a time and get unlimited instant view
(TONS of Disney and Nick whole seasons on there btw)

That sounds really neat. I never would have thought they would have such a wide variety of DVDs. I figured it was entertainment type movies only, thanks for thr info.

I tried searching netflix for educational stuff, but must not be very good at entering the correct terms or something. I couldn't find much of anything and actually just canceled our membership. Maybe I should try again.

Have you all tried Hulu? www.hulu.com I just heard of it and as far as I can tell, it's free.

Hulu is free.. but the breif moment I was there I wasn't impressed.

I think it's called teachertube.com or something like that has lots of educational videos as well.

I do lots of google searches "movies about ...." and then hit netflix to see if I can find what I found from google.

We do 3 at a time rightnow but we are busy and watch during school days sometimes just to be sure we get them back in time to get the one we really want lol!
I love that they have a lot of variety. For the educational ones I would think trying even Historical or history
Science may bring up a few science fictions as well but look down the list, its practically endless!
And if you dont watch it , it doesnt cost more to hold on to it for a few weeks even !

I went with Satillite instead and I am kind of hating it.
Of course, I am pretty stuck for two years. ugh. I constantly find myself saying..."turn it off, turn it off!!"
I did just get the access mag. to try to plan better...not very helpful...the movies are listed alphabetically by name...woop de do...and on the programs it says. for ex. "biography" OOOOOh k. that is also not very helpful. ugh ugh.
I might call them and say...there needs to be a search online where you can put in ancient Greece and get all the history doc. and the biographies of Greeks and etc. etc.
So we watch George Lopez, iCarley, Survivorman and that is about it.
(I sneak in Whose wedding is it anyway occasionally, which is research because dd is getting married in July.)
So maybe next year we will do Netflix anyhow.
I need something sort of educational that the guys can do on my 'sleeping' days.
