They are back home now and everything looks okay. They did a CAT scan to make sure and he has some stronger pain medication now.
You can breath now. I am glad things went ok, glad you were able to be with your parents too, that was the hardest part for me when my dad had his bad spell right before Christmas.
Update... Today he took out the catheter and the severe pains came back again. My mom talked to the doctor who had treated him in the ER and he wanted him to come back. He now has an infection in his bladder and they are doing a CT scan to see if they can find any other problems. They are probably going to keep him overnight to give him IV antibiotics. Things have been really crazy, so please keep him and my mom in your prayers.
I just got a call from my mom - They found a blood clot in each lung and are going to do surgery tonight. This doesn't sound too good right now, so prayers are appreciated. I think my hubby and I are going to go over to be with my mom. Thanks!
Amanda... take care of you too - easier said than done I know, but you have to. Prayers for all of you.
The clots are a possibility when someone has abdominal surgery... The doctor in St. Louis had told him they lose more people from clots than anything else, so my dad was already scared about it. If a clot breaks lose it can cause a heart attack or stroke and there isn't much they can do about it. Anyway, they did a full body scan last night and found a larger clot in his leg/groin area which could be very dangerous. They did a quick surgery to put a screen in his inferior vena cava, which is a main artery going into the heart. This will keep any clots that might break lose from going into his heart or lungs. He does have clots in both lungs, but I guess they aren't a major concern and that they will have to wait for them to dissolve. He can't take anti-coagulants to break up the clots because he has bleeding in his bladder from the infection. They have him on several antibiotics in case there is an infection in his blood. The tests won't come back on that for a while. The clot in his groin may be an abcess that they have to remove. They aren't sure what they are going to do right now. We are thankful that he went to the ER last night - He thought he was having gas pains again, but a doctor on call recommended he come in to get checked out again. When they were scanning the abdomen for the bladder infection, they caught a glimpse of the clots in the bottom of his lungs. We're thankful they found them when they did... I'm not sure he's out of the woods yet, but not knowing about the clots he could have died quickly.
Amanda, I think God had a hand in this! He can use things like infections to get people where they need to be to get even bigger things taken care of! It's neat that God works in so many different ways! We will continue to pray for your father, and hope all works out well for him!
My dad is still in intensive care, but things seem to be improving now. He is in ICU because of the blood clots, so I think they will keep him there until they can start the anti-coagulants. The bladder infection is standing in the way of that, and they finally figured out what was causing it last night. (Thanks to an attentive nurse.) It has been a roller coaster ride because initially, they first thought he was going to have to fly up to St. Louis today to get tubes put in his kidneys. Thankfully, the local urologist came in last night and looked at things with a scope and the problem wasn't as bad as they first thought. The catheter tube was not inserted properly so he fixed that. The bad news is that he has to wear a catheter for another month, but without the bladder infection they wouldn't have found the clots, so we'll take the good with the bad.
oh, Amanda, I feel for you I understand how frustrating it is and how heartbreaking it is to not know all the things going wrong. I hope things will work out better soon.
They decided to send him to St. Louis. We've been waiting aaaaaallllllll day for them to get an ambulance to drive him up. It's now scheduled for 6:45 pm. It has been ridiculous. I'm now thinking they should have sent him up there Wednesday night when they first thought he should go. Please pray that he will get prompt attention when he arrives - He has fluid draining into his pelvic cavity from his bladder and this needs to be drained off and the hole fixed. I'm not sure why they were dragging their feet.
Oh my Lord have mercy!!! Praying that the right treatment from the right doctors will happen and sooner than later. Oh my word! Take care of yourself too Amanda
