What is a good but inexpensive elementary art curriculum, mainly drawing? I'd love to get dd7 art lessons but can't afford them here. I am going to look into it when we move - the fine arts legue has kids classes but I dont know what the cost is. I think she would really benefit from and love to learn to draw.

We have been using Artistic Pursuits as our main curriculum, but recently found a book called Hooked on Drawing by Sandy Brooke that my oldest daughter loves to use.

Kinder-art's website has lots of great ideas. You don't have to pursue a formal curriculum; get some art books at the library, even from the adult section to help guide him.

Also the Draw Write Now series is nice for younger ones also learning early penmanship skills.

What about that Thomas Kinkaid curriculum? Don't know how much it is, but it's suppose to be pretty good!

Drawing Basics With Thomas Kinkade is geared for students around 3rd-6th grade but could be adapted up to 8th grade. The reading is easy enough but after unit one, some of the concepts become more difficult because it isn't just drawing, it has vocab and some history involved in the later units but it is a good curriculum.

Drawing Textbook by Bruce McIntyre is a cheap paperback book that teaches drawing. I like what it teaches thought it is a bit dry. Some children will really like McIntyre's style of teaching and some won't. The back of the books lists the address and web site as:

    Audio-Visual Drawing Program
    P.O. Box 50424
    Irvine, CA 92619

We did this program in second grade, after our art teacher quit. I can't say enough good about it! You can split the lessons up, stretching each over two weeks if you want. There is a flower project you do as you learn each concept, adding to the picture as you go. Thomas Kinkaid has such a gentle, calm teaching manner. Jeannie so enjoyed it and was sad when the program ended. The girl draws like a champ, in part from this program. I got it from the library, then ordered one from CDB.com I think it was 54.00 total. It's dynamite and I wish there'd be a part two.

Patty, doesn't the box actually say Pre-k- adult? I gave mine away when we were done, so I no longer have it here to see. I thought that was wild, but I guess a pre-ker could do the very beginning of it?

Thank you for the suggestions. I was gone all weekend and will now look into the different suggestions. Gracie just loves to do any type of art project that I thought I should look into finding something for her.

No. The box I had said it was adaptable up to 8th grade. I remember this being one of the reasons I purchased it. I didn't want a curriculum that was specifically aimed at a specific grade. This way we were able to put it aside if it was too difficult and pick up on it later. I sold it last year so I no longer have the box, but yes, it was easily adapted up to grade 8. Now, mine was also an older version with a VHS. The new version might be different.

Although it could be adapted up to 8th grade, the art lessons themselves could be used by an adult. I think the vocab and the reading are way to easy for an adult, not that they couldn't learn from it.

If she likes crafts and art, buy her A Beka's Arts and Crafts book. It is great. Ems loved it. It has many crafts for each season as well as basic drawing techniques. The drawing techniques are simple in the lower grades and become more difficult as they near fifth and sixth grade. Many of the crafts can be cut right out of the book and some you need to supply material. I believe, don't quote me :D, the book price ranges between $10-$15.

I forgot to add that the A Beka craft book is a nice thick book with thick paper. There are so many crafts that we never use the whole book.

Patty I searched and could only find Abeka's arts and crafts for 2's and 3's but nothing for elementary grades. Do you have a link?
So far from what I have briefly looked over the morning I am liking the Kinkade a lot.

Here is a link. Hopefully it works. Let me know if it doesn't. To the left of the screen, click on category, then click on art. It will should bring up a run down of each art book for each grade. Unfortunately, they do not have great pictures of the books.

Hopefully the link works for you.

Evan Moor has some interesting selections under art. I use Teaching Art to Children.
