I never use to really like board games but now that my kids are older we really enjoy them. Lastnight we played construction monopoly and it was a blast! I think that it is addicting. We started at 6pm and played until 1am. The whole family was up at 7am wanting to start again! I made a compromise and after each school subject we each get 3 rolls of the dice before moving on to the next subject. We also play scattegories and that is fun too. Alot of really weird answers are given in that game. Adding 5,000, cribbage, and carpet cribbage to the list.
DH and I like a lot of "weird" games. Mostly we play games from Rio Grand games. Our most recent favorite is Dominion. We are addicted, but the nice this is that you can usually play out a whole game in 30 minutes. The boys are still into 'kiddie games' like chutes and ladders and candy land. However, my 7yo is getting into Blokus. And he really wants to learn Othello, but the strategy elludes him, still.
Settlers of Catan is definitely our family favorite. Some of my other favorites are Fallenlands, Shadows over Camelot, Small World, Alhambra Carcassone, and Ticket to Ride. Unfortunately we don't play board games any more
Ooooh, I LOVE all of those, as well. It's pretty much a given that a game is sold in a regular store (like TRU or Walmart), we probably don't own it.
There's absolutely no question: Diplomacy. There's no luck, no dice, etc. It's all about how well your team can negotiate deals with other teams in order to achieve an ultimate objective: to take over the world. It takes a long time to play, and you need a number of people, but it's worth it. It really helps you to understand the importance of coordinated short-term tactics to achieve a long-term strategy. Funnily enough, my son at Georgia Tech had to play a game of Diplomacy as a main component of a first-year course. They played one round a week. For our younger children (ages 10 and up, maybe) we play a game based on Sherlock Holmes. You are read a story and then must visit various rooms to find clues. You must determine the guilty party, the motive, and how the crime was committed.
We play a lot of games here. Banana Grams Phase 10 Uno guess those aren't really board games. Trouble Apples to Apples Life Our newest favorite is called "You've Been Sentenced" and it's a sentence construction game - and the funnies ensue!!!
Games we often play: Monopoly (assorted versions) Sorry Sorry Sliders Battleship Yahtzee Carcasonne The Game of Life And we've also got a really nifty little card game called "Torches and Pitchforks", which is small so we usually toss it in our bags whenever we're travelling anywhere.
I assume you mean besides the good ol' ones..... Scattagories !!!! (My favorite) Sequence is a good one Scene-it games, especially Disney (board game played with dvd) For card games, our family favorite is Skip-bo. Really kick it up by dividing into teams to play it. Those are just off the top of my head...
Some we plan that others haven't mentioned (family games not necessarily board games): Blokus Dutch Blitz Gobblet
Our interests vary, so I'll just jot down our individual faves (of standard games): Dh--chess, Monopoly Me--Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, Taboo Ds--chess (especially on his Star Wars set), Apples to Apples Dd--Apples to Apples Anyone heard of a game called Moods? I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I played at a friend's a few years back (ok, about a decade ago). It is hilarious! You get a phrase to say, but you have to say it using a secret "mood" and people have to guess what the mood is.....her dad--big burly man--got stuck saying "I look good in hot pants"!
Brooke, I have not heard of Moods but you can get information on where to buy it at www boardgamegeek com. (Beware, some of the items on this site may not be suitable for the very young.) Once on the site, search for the game and then click on a seller.
Great thread! My oldest (5) LOVES games- however we are bored to death with Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders and they are to easy for her. What should we tackle next?
At that age my children liked Trouble, Mouse Trap, and Uno. You could adapt most games that do not have reading and have a lot of luck.
We played alot of scrabble when my kids were younger. Now they don't grab that game as often, I wonder if they had too much, hmm.
I like word games and strategy games Scrabble, Mad Grab, Scattegorgies... fun word games! Stratego, Risk, Axis and Allies.. fun strategy games! I really enjoy card games too, but haven't played any in years!! hearts and euchre are my favorites!
My kids loved Cranium Cadoo at that age. We also taught them chess by the time they were 4. Dd loved Uno Attack because it shot cards at her. We also have an old version of Hang Man that the kids used for spelling when they were little.
