I learned my numbers by playing card games with my grandparents. I'm told that I knew how to add and subtract at a very early age. I've been fortunate to have always been good at math, and I wonder how much of that came from card games instilling in me a love of numbers. You can imagine that we played card games with our children too - although they don't seem to be anywhere near as interested in math. My younger brother learned other things by playing cards: He learned how to see our grandad's cards through the reflection in his glasses.
 I should have added that, along with chess, ds learned to play poker (sans gambling) by the age of 4 as well! We want our kids to be well-rounded, right?!
Anybody here play dominoes?? I learned from my dad's cousin when I was 5. Used to play canasta for hours on end. Haven't played now since, like, maybe since college??? (many moons ago) Also used to play Rummy 500, especially the two-person version also known as "cutthroat". Would love to play Scrabble, but I can't find anybody to play with -- I know too many words! I like Boggle, but don't get to play much of that either -- same reason. The kids at school like to play Connect Four. We have lots of other games (from Barrel of Monkeys to chess) but this is the one they'll play. And legos, and 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles. That's about it.
My husband and I LOVE LOVE canasta! That was a requirement when we got married- he had to be a good canasta partner!
Being a huge nerd my favourites are scrabble, boggle, upwords, othello, rummicub, dominos and tantrix. My kids love the same games. Trivial pursuit is a family favourite along with a game called Smart Donkey. (okay so not donkey, but you know that word for another animal similar to a donkey ) We don't play Monopoly in this house, I am pretty sure Dh cheats but I can never catch him. He's very crafty.
any game as long as it with my family. Weather I like it or not I will sit through it just to have wonderful family time with them.
My kids love the Allowance game and the Dinosaur version of Monopoly. We are good about playing games when it is snowing outside, but have a hard time sitting still once the weather is nice. We do need to play them more often.
