So when is everyone starting their new school year? And what are you using? I am not sure when we will start officially, but we have continued with phonics, math and writing. My dd is only 4, so we go at her own pace. She picked to do a summer and an ocean theme over the summer. And I have found so much to incorporate the phonics, math and writing. Thanks
We won't start back up full time until late Aug. or maybe even after Labor Day depending on the weather and how things are going then. If our son gets to come home on block leave around that time we will not start school then. My girls will be starting 12th and 7th grades. I am planning the work for next year now and am getting anxious to see what the girls think about everything. They, however, do not want to even think about it for a good long time. They are more interested in camp, VBS, swimming, and enjoying the warm weather. Can't say that I blame them. Have fun with the ocean study. That sounds like fun.
We'll be starting the week my husband returns to school. Not sure when exactly, I would guess Aug. 23rd. As far as what I'm using, this is one year I still am up in the air on some things!!!
Normally I would say we'd start at the end of August, or beginning of September, but since we had issues with PS and truancy charges {I did not officially un-enroll the girls from PS before starting to homeschool so now we have to go to court once a month and show our work, to prove we really are hs and not just saying that we are:roll:} so I guess we will be schooling through the summer, but at a lighter schedule than we were.
My oldest two 12th and 7th grade will start after Labor Day!! I goal in to get my 4 1/2 yo into some kind of school routine in about two weeks. That way we get get routine going while the older two are taking a break. But when my 7th gr. gets finished with school this Fri. I will be so ready for a break, that goal may fly out the window!!
Due to lots of life happenings, we'll be doing some schoolwork over the summer. We do have lots going on, so it'll be with some breaks. I'm hoping to be done at least mid-July, so we can have at least 6 weeks of vacation!
I prefer to HS year round, but with a light schedule during the summer. We started 2nd grade back at the beginning of May and use a May thru May schedule. The traditional "school year" will start Aug 16th.
This is our first year. Our official 365 day year starts Aug 1 but co-op classes start Aug 16th so I think that's when we'll have our official kick off. But we're easing into homeschool over the summer. I don't want to give him 2 months off then say "okay we have to have school at home 4.5 hours a day now. ADJUST!" LOL So my goal is to build up to our required time over the next 2 months. We are homeschooling for free (mostly) we'll be using: For the 1st grader: phonics and spelling: clicknkids.com Math: Total math 3 Science: co-op - apologia zoology 1 Social studies: co-op - explorers-civil war Bible: my own stuff Unit Study: on farming will handle a lot of our handwriting and writing Spanish: Rock n learn and Live mocha Arts and crafts: co-op If I decide to do grammar this year we'll use this. The 3 year old will have a preschool learning class, playtime and arts and crafts class at co-op. And he'll do spanish with the 1st grader. He also likes his online phonics games. But he's basically unschooled. He learns what he wants when he wants. He loves doing the spanish and phonics though and wants to "go to school" like big brother. I have more stuff I'll supplement with throughout the year here and there, but this is the bulk of it. And it also doesn't include all the free online educational games they'll play. LOL or the documentaries the 6 year old will watch.....
We will be starting a week from today. This summer dd will be doing: Science: An ocean animals class at the library Art: A watercolor class at the library Drama club at the library Geography: A hands on thing I've created myself Latin: I have a USBorne sticker book and a copy of Minimus (?) from the library Nature study: self-guided Reading club from the library Phys Ed: Karate and maybe demo team and I'm getting a lot of classic movies bc I'm tired of Cartoon Network LOL This winter we'll be using Lesson Pathways for a lot of stuff, continue karate, reading and classic movies, then do: Music: church choir Youth group Sunday School: the third graders do service projects, get their first Bible, attend a seminar on communion and do some other neat stuff Co-op: Usually handles science, social studies, Spanish, writing and maybe art Of course, we'll also do field trips as they come up throughout the year and this fall we'll do any other library stuff we can get into. The rest of the time we'll unschool being led by our passions and life itself. This is what works best for us as we try to take advantage of a lot of stuff where my social butterfly can excel and then while home I have to take care of the house and my writing biz and as a single mom my cup is filled to overflowing LOL
We have been doing a lighter schedule since mid-April. We'll start to do more after our vacation in July.
We will begin our new year July 5th for the littles while Garrett is at Boy Scout camp and then he will begin on July 12th on his trial run to see if he will be staying home next year or not (I'm not going to tell him it's a trial run thing, just that we are starting school then.. if we have been able to get along alright from the last day of PS on Friday until he leaves for camp). What are we using? Littles: Math: Family Math for Young Children, Funtastic Frogs (we have finally found all of the stuff for them!!), McRuffy Math and lots of fun and games. Phonics: McRuffy SE Kindergarten and I found a brand new set of Scholastic at home Phonics and Reading that I really love.. so I am trying to figure out how to blend the 2 programs... I also have HOP K that we will most likely use the readers from. We will also play on starfall.com, watch leapfrog videos and play some games and things. Science: McRuffy Science K, Nature walks, Magic School Bus, Let's Read and Find Out books and what ever else falls in our laps. Social Studies: mommy made unit studies on community, self, and family For Garrett (provided he is home) Math: Family Math, Family Math 2, Charlotte Mason Business Math, TT6 (again) and some games. I am aslo thinking of getting him LOF fractions again. Spelling: http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html along with www.spellingcity.com Grammar: Easy Grammar (I have this, but am really looking at Growing with Grammar, but I'm not even sure I want to focus on grammar this year.. we will see). Writing: Writing Strands Science: I planned on Science Explorer since I have the whole set.. but he asked for chemistry.. and I have lots of chemistry experiment books we can use. History: The Complete Book of World History along with The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History and living books and hands on projects as I can make them fit in. Typing: Meavis Beacon Computer Programming (his request), not sure yet Music, Art, and PE are delight driven for all the kids.
Like you, we are continuing Math, Reading & Writing year round. We are going to throw in some Science stuff here & there as well though.
We have kinda started. I have been doing half days and keeping track of all that we do. Once we have completed enough to count as a full day I put it into homeschool tracker and count a day. We are getting about 3 days in each week. We are only doing that to keep making progress in the math and reading skillls they were working on and to enable me to take time off for a trip in the middle of October. We did that last summer too and it really helped to have that extra flexibility in our schedule.
Whenever I get everything together Actually we will start with Math and Language Arts over the summer and some science (plus we'll see a couple of other things).. I'm having everyone do "a little" school over the summer - at least 1 subject. 1 kid has to do Algebra II at home (our oldest foster child)..... and then the other one really needs to work on vocabulary. Jake and Alexis actually want to be doing SOMETHING so we are about to get started. I just got some of Alexis's books in today and even she likes the science book.
We ened up taking lots of little breaks this year so we still have a month or so of this year to finish so I am not thinking too much about next year yet. We will probably start next year the day after labor Day.
We take off all of June (except having the kids read books for pleasure of course). Then we start back a few mornings each week starting after July 4th weekend...then we'll start back full steam in August (with hopefully 10-ish July school days under our belt...lol). We always end our school year by Memorial Day weekend (if not before).
I am thinking we will start late August or early Sep. We are doing "summer school" now. I just can not let go. My kids will be using- Singapore Math Hooked on Phonics, Rocket Phonics and Yesterdays's Classics Readers Handwriting without tears Explode the Code Sonlight IG Core 1 for History or a Around the World theme for Geography (can not decide) Sonlight Read outlouds Artistic Pursuits Growing with Grammar Soaring with Spelling La Clase Divertida- Spanish
Today was the official start of our new year. We are using McRuffy LA, math and science Down to Earth Geography grade 1 American History (some books I have picked with activities added in) How to teach art to children
Start Back I plan to review all summer on and off...don't want them to lose anything. Will start school full time by the end of August.
