We've had a problem with grain moths since we moved to this house. I've tried everything I can find to get rid of them with zero success. So I store all my grains in the fridge or freezer. And I usually only buy what I'm going to use right away on other stuff like noodles, chocolate chips, nuts, etc. Grocery money was a little tight this month, so I bought a 6lb bag of noodles at Sam's today to supplement our healthy stuff. Now I'm wondering, though, if I can put the raw noodles in the fridge. Any ideas? If I have a chance tomorrow, I'll try to cook the whole lot of them then freeze the cooked noodles in one-meal portions. But I'm not sure if I'll get it done. I'd hate to waste them to the stupid bugs in the meantime.
I see no problem. Eons ago, I took a baking class, and the instructor told us when we bought flour (or any grain), put it in the freezer for a week - that would kill the larvae. I've since read it is actually as little as 24 hours, but I'm too chicken. As you know, it's too hard to get rid of them once they're in the house. I think you could definitely do the same with your pastas. Sorry that doesn't help eradicate the bugs from the house, though.
At this point, it's just a matter of dealing with them. I'll put the noodles in the fridge, then. I couldn't see any reason it would be a problem, but I often don't foresee issues until it's too late. Especially in the kitchen. lol
I have frozen pasta, uncooked, and beans, rice, cake mixes, chocolate chips ect they all freeze great.
Thanks! I believed the other ladies when they said it would be OK, but it's really nice to hear from someone who's BTDT, KWIM? I'd like to get a large chest freezer and just put everything in it (including the dog/cat food, which the moths love nearly as much as they love chocolate. lol).
We had those moths a few years ago and we ended up bringing big rubbermaid type boxes into the kitchen and stored all of our food in those for months. A lot of that food was in big storage bags. It took a while, but we finally got rid of them. I hope you are able to get rid of them soon!
They were here when we moved in and we've lived here for almost 7 years :roll: We tried emptying our cabinets. We also soaked, I mean SOAKED, the cabinets down with bleach. We sprayed into every crack and stuff, too. Maybe we just didn't keep the food away long enough for them to die. Maybe I'll get DH's painting desk out and use the containers like you said. Not that there's really anything in the cabinets, now, but I guess anything is food.
I keep all uncooked noodles, rice, oats, flour and all that kind of stuff in the fridge. We get little black bugs and those tiny ants really badly. So, I have to. There is not a problem storing them in your fridge at all, they will keep longer.
