I was writing a blog post tonight questioning whether atmosphere matters to the quality of a homeschoolers education and was wondering what other people's school rooms look like. Anyone care to share pics or links to pics on their blog? (We don't have a set school room.) I'll share my article after its written. If anyone wants to chime in with your opinion on if atmosphere matters, I don't mind including a link to your blog with your advice...
Sure atmosphere matters, the more comfortable the child is the easier it is to learn! We often do our reading snuggled on the sofa, or my bed. They write at the dining room table or on clipboards on my bed, or their bed, or the sofa. Many days we have school in our jammies just because we can. They learn better when they are comfy, and what's more comfy than your own home?
I was thinking more, do they need a designated school room or not? We don't have one this year, we're all over the house, but I just wondered what others thought.
Well, we will soon be moving into a new house, & today my husband suggested using one of the basement rooms as our classroom, and it really got me thinking. I was thinking about how dingy & dark the room was, how cramped it felt, how creepy it was... & I decided that I would much rather have school stuff cluttering my dining room then making my kids go down in to the dungeon. lol. i do not think my ds would have done well down there at all. We will have a classroom space set up upstairs, where it's bright & sunny & you just feel like ur living. We also do a lot of reading on the couch, etc. I think comfort, good lighting & a positive feeling in the room are key to having great things happen during at home homeschooling
Here is a link to a thread I posted about classroom pictures, hopefully you haveseveral more people add their pictures to ur thread, but this might be helpful too http://homeschoolspot.com/showthread.php?t=23642&highlight=pics
We have shelves with their workbooks on it. On the main table there is a small grey office divider (we call them slots) and each child has one. This is where their workbooks are kept. There is a small shelf on their where I keep 6yo's minilibrary (books from the library). The slots have gotten a little cluttered/messy since 6yo finished TRL, but I'm gonna clean them out this weekend and go back to stocking them with their daily dose of school work. Shelves and slots are as close as we've come to school space, we work where ever we land.
Your room looks great! I am in the process of redoing our homeschool room. It takes up most of the basement - but it isn't dark and dingy because we have a walk-out. I will be ordering a new reclining love seat for DVD watching and reading and we are still setting up our chemistry bench - I can't wait for it to be finished. Our room has looked the same since we moved to this house 3 1/2 years ago so this is a welcome change.
Thanks! That room is actually what sold us on this house when we moved. Its called a planning room and is right off of the breakfast room. I dont know what you would would use it for normally but it make a perfect homeschool room! We have lived here for a year today and that is the only room I have made an effort to decorate LOL.
Thanks for sharing, ladies. Anna. I think I already added a link to your homeschool room in my blog post but feel free to go to my blog and add a link yourself in the little linky thing at the end of the post. Anyone is welcome to add a link to their rooms as well. http://thosecrazyhomeschoolers.blogspot.com/2010/08/atmosphere-schmatmosphere.html
I have a few pictures of our school room on my blog. I'd like to have the room painted, but just not in the mood to do it myself. For us a designated room is helpful. For my children it helps to set the tone/pace. For me it helps me with my OCD. Having stuff lying all over my house would send me into panic mode. I love having a door to close. Sounds weird, but when that door closes my boys know it's time to get serious. http://periodichappenings.blogspot.com/2010/08/our-classroom-is-in-need-of-revamping.html
I don't think having a classroom makes you a better homeschool, maybe a less crowded more organized one, but not BETTER. I don't think homeschoolers who have a classroom have a better education. You just have a place for everything is all... Here's ours http://childledhomeschool.com/our-homeschool/our-classroom/
We didn't have a classroom for most of last year. We have one now. It doesn't matter. He liked it both ways. He likes having "his" desk now, but working on the couch or bed was fine for us, too.
Sonita, thanks for adding your homeschool room to my blog post. Wendy, I added yours to the blogpost as well (was really experimenting to see how someone can add a link since I've never used it before.)
We had a school room and we were much less productive. For us it's all about comfort. We aren't comfortable sitting at desks and learning, so we have school in the living room, or dining room. The boys learn better that way because they are relaxed. OUr Curriculum has a cabinet to be put up in when we are finished for the day and then we play where we just had school.
Our house is too small to have a special room. We usually just use the kitchen table, the great outdoors, and the couch for reading.
I need to update our pictures now!! I won the hip homeschool giveaway last week and our new table got here today! (is it weird I'm super excited over a TABLE!?!?! LOL)
Mine is on my blog. The kids really like it. Even when we're not doing school lessons they still like to spend a lot of time in there.
