For us having a separate room is a life saver. It is a homeschool room as well as a playroom. The side I didn't show has all my sons toys, so he can play while I am doing work with the girls. This is the first year we have had a room, usually we have everything in the kitchen (making a huge mess). I kinda copied it from a link to one of the homeschool rooms from a previous thread on the subject ;)

If you can't tell it is a garage, but we never parked our cars in there. It was pretty much just storage for junk we never use. We thought it would make much better use as a homeschool/playroom. So, we had a garage sale last week to empty it out, and then used the money to buy paint and some carpet. Then my dh bartered some work for an ac/heater unit that you put in the window.

We have a big old victorian house. We turned our formal "front room" into our school room. It has a huge picture window so we get lots of sun. We have a large wooden bookcase/storage unit in there, plus some wire shelving that can be configured in many different ways. We also have a second dining table that we all sit around. My kids do their school work, and I bead (I sell beaded jewelry on line and at festivals). Sometimes we relocate as desired. Reading will take place on my lap in the living room. Sometimes I have to do computer work, so one of the kids will sit at Dad's desk while the other kids are outside for "recess". It's a lose organization that works well for us! It's nice to have a space for everything school, and separate living space for the family!

    Sometimes yes sometimes no.
My home schoolers varied through the years. One or two years all three sat in school looking room ( family room converted for school seasons) and did a great job of 'schooling ' for most of their subjects. We have almost always had reading be in another room , such as quieter spaces, living room... outside on the upstairs of the fort... etc. We have varied through our going on 14 years. I say whatever works at the moment run with it!

WOW what a great room!! I love the color!! We are in the process of moving to SC (fixing up the house a little at a time) and we will be using our family rom as a classroom. I would love to have a garage or large room to convert.
