I mailed my sons withdrawal letter to the school with return receipt on the
7th. My husband has received an automated call from the school every day. I have checked the recipt on usps.com everyday and it states the expected date of delivery is Oct. 8. That was a Saturday and the mail didn't run Monday so they should've received the letter yesterday. But it shows that it's still at the post office. What should I do?? I'm thinking that I should call the school at this point due to the circumstances of our withdrawal.. Advice??? Now I'm stressing...They told my son that if he didn't show up they would send the police to bring him back in handcuffs.. I Do NOT want that for him and the school don't want that to happen because there will be some MAJOR issues if that happens!!

Honestly, I'd call HSLDA on that one.

One, can they take your kid to school in handcuffs?

two, Tx homeschool law, from my understanding, and I"m not in Tx, isn't that strict. How many days has he missed? Can you hand deliver, email or fax a letter until the one form the PO gets there??

Can you hand deliver the letter to the school/school board?
Ever state is different, so I don't know exactly how it works where you are. Call them, and perhaps give them the tracking number of the letter?
    Sorry they're stressing you out.

This is the 3rd day that he's missed.. He missed a few days at the beginning of the school year for doctors appointments and we got a warning letter for truancy.. Stating that they can't miss 4 days in a 6 week period or we would be charged with truancy.. I'm calling in the morning and we are going to the school tomorrow to clean Tyler's locker out so I'll probably hand deliver a copy of the letter I already sent. I'm sorta irritated at hubby because he didn't tell me about the calls until today... The post office is going to get an earfull too.. I'm so sick and tired of them dropping the ball. This is NOT the first time..

Who told your son he would be brought back in handcuffs? An automated call to your DH is simply in the system- an actual person speaking to your son is different. Why was this conversation with your son and not you or DH?
    I think hand-delivering a withdrawal will suffice.

He took an allergy pill to school and got in trouble. They stuck him in ISS and was about to send him off to alternative school for the violation. He asked what happens if you don't come to school during the "punishment Period" and was told that he would be brought back in handcuffs...

I just emailed the principal of the High School the withdrawal letter. We will also be faxing a copy of the letter along with the receipt for certified mail in the morning... I would prefer not to have to go to the school over this matter. I hope that this clears it all up..

Honestly, I'd take a breath and keep my calm. This will likely be cleared up in a day or two when the letter arrives and you've already taken further steps to deal with it. You can deal with this.

I might call the HSLDA if it escalated but right not it's nothing a clear-headed parent can't address herself.

I think we have it taken care of with the email to the principal and the letter being faxed this morning.. I will call the post office though and find out why the letter hasn't been delivered..

Did you send the letter 'delivery confirmation?' If so, it's been my experience that's a complete and utter waste of money. I've used it a total of 4 times and will never do so again. It NEVER showed up as the item ever being delivered at all. To go by the USPS site, it never left the post office. However, the items had always reached their destinations.

So, if you sent the info that way, your letter probably DID make it.

Oh, and with Texas being what we are in terms of homeschooling, I wouldn't worry about getting into trouble over it. You've provided 2 additional withdrawal notifications, and you have the post office receipt as verification that you'd sent the first one.

Wow...when you posted about the allergy pill incident, I thought to myself that school sounded like prison. Now, reading about the handcuffs remark, I guess some administrators view it as prison!

Well, I went to the post office to find out what happened to my letter today.... They set it aside and FORGOT to deliver it.. It was delivered today and I received a call from the principal stating that I had to come in and sign withdrawal papers and also that I had to go to the administrative office and sign a paper called letter of assurance and talk to the superintendant.. I told him NO WAY.. I told him that by law I was not required to do that. The letter of withdrawal was all that they needed.. I told him that I had a letter from the commissioner of TEA stating that the withdrawal letter was all that I needed.. He wants me to send him a copy of that letter. Which I will and I'm also sending him a letter of assurance. I called Texas Home School Coalition Association and that is what they told me to do. She said that I should not hear anything else from them after this. I sure hope she's right.. Good Grief this is irritating... This has disrupted my whole school day!!!!

Thanks... I ended up faxing a copy of the Letter of Assurance along with the letter from the Commissioner of TEA to the principal and the superintendent.. I sent the same in a letter and mailed them as well. The one to the principal was mailed priority with delivery notification.. Had I not had issues with the delivery of the initial letter I probably would have just mailed these ones and been done with it. But I wanted to make sure that I covered all my bases and showed that I complied to their requests without stepping over the boundaries that they had already crossed.

I did ask when the letter would be delivered and they said tomorrow.. We shall see.. I didn't send it where they had to sign for it so there shouldn't be any delays.

I sorta laughed when I talked to the principal and he asked if I was trying to say that I was now homeschooling.. UH yes, That's what the letter says.. DUH! I'm not new to this.. When I pulled the kids out the last time I didn't hear anything from the school district. Maybe because the school year hadn't started yet and they were just beginning enrollment for the year.. Who knows.

It's crazy isn't it? And they honestly wonder why so many parents don't want their kids in that environment. So sorry it's been so hard on you. Did you guys make it to the Homeschool days at the Maize? I would love to meet you if you are able to join GRACE:)

Glad it's settled. I also have had difficulty with the post office, though just one time. It had been delivered, but the "follow through" part never happened, so there was no record of it being delivered.
