Today, we lost our beloved "class pet". Hubby got the Littles this hamster when they started formal(ish) schooling 2 1/2 years ago. I have rattled his cage every day for a year because I couldn't believe he was still alive... today he wasn't. The kids loved him even if we couldn't play with him (He was a biter!).

Now we need do decide on a new class pet. I think a plant is better, I know I will kill them, I'm not so sad when they die.

Do you have any "class pets"?

Unfortunatley, No. We would have to pay $250 upfront and $50 extra dollars a month for even a tiny little goldfish. Can't afford it, so sadly no class pets here. :( Be happy to see what everyone else has!

I'm so sorry to hear about your Hampster. :(

Omg Meg, that is crazy. I could understand that for a dog or cat, but not a critter who spends it's entire life in a cage!

We also have 2 dogs (1 pure pit bull and 1 labrabull 1/2 pit 1/2 lab) and a cat ( my big grey striped fluffball) and also my turtle.

We have a dog and a goldfish. Our dog is 12 and a half years old and has trouble getting around. We have been thinking she might not be with us much longer and it breaks our hearts.

Jennifer... ummmm ewwww? lol I actually thought of a mouse or two, but I couldn't handle rats.

Minthia ((((HUGS)))) That is such a hard thing to go through! 2 years ago this past November we had finally had to make that decision for our dalmatian. We had spent 6 months having to carry her up and down the stairs to go out to the bathroom. It was so hard to see her like that but it hurt so bad to know she wouldn't come home with us once we took her in. I still cry over her.. I have tears right now. She was at least 12. Best dog I ever had! I try to find comfort in thinking of her now being able to run around in doggie heaven chasing trucks and rubber bouncy balls.

I'm sorry about your hamster. :(

We have one cat named Sniffy. My youngest was two when we got him and named him that because he smells everything. I don't know if he would count as a class pet though.

I would love to get the boys a turtle or some tadpoles as it would be really cool to seem them change into frogs. Lizards are neat but they don't seem very interested in them. They would love a hamster or guinea pig but I don't want the mess.

I have thought of lizards, hubby and I used to have 2 fence post lizards that we found in the woods, we kept them for a while then took them back to where we found them. They weren't the most fun either, though they were neat to watch. I also had some anoles as a kid, they were pretty neat too.

Hubby says lets take them to pick another hamster... hmmmmmm maybe. Our cage isn't too messy, it's a glass aquarium with a top, we have some tubes coming out and things. Hubby really wanted to make the tubes run all around the house.. I put my foot down..lol

Haaate lizards! OMG I am so squeemish about them.

We have 2 cats. That's enough for me. I thought about a hamster but I know they are really messy so even though the kids ask for one when we go to the pet store, they aren't getting one!

Amy, no way..lol No voting! Hubby has them convinced they want a snake! I would literally move out if they brought one home..lol They would use a write in clause!

Now Sommer, I was surprised at your reaction to our rats lol! I wouldn't have agreed but my sis has a pair and loves them and Joyce did alot of research before I agreed. We can't have and indoor cat or dog and the hamsters aren't interactive like the rats are. We have had them less than two weeks and they already are learning her habits. One selling point is they are trainable. We got a ferret cage from freecycle, bought toys at the dollar store and we have crocheted tents and hammocks for them. If she ever gets her pics uploaded I'll post her setup. We've had hamsters numerous times but they aren't as interactive and if they are biters they are even less fun lol.

EEEKKKKK I'm trying to shoo my screen out the door with the broom. lol

I don't know why but rats give me the hee-bee jee-bees lol Nothing like snakes freak me out but they make me shudder. I think it's their tails, their tales make me think snake. :-/

I have heard they are awesome for pets.

Today they have asked for: rabbits, a new hamster, a bird, a "land turtle" which lead to telling them about tortoises, a snake, and a lizard because it can share crickets with the turtle.

I am sorry about your hampster.

We do not have actual class pets, just pets.

We have two German Shepherds, a Labrador, a Taco Terrier, and three fish. Two of our rats have died, so we are down to one rat. She is old for a rat. Everyday I expect to find her dead. We had five tarantulas but a couple passed. We also got rid of a pup we had and our Guinea Pig. The Guinea Pig was more care than we realized. Rats are a piece of cake compared to the Guinea Pig.

It will be interesting to see what pets come along this year. We are going to wait until the rat dies before getting more rats. We are looking at replacing the tarantulas that died, but we want to buy them young so they grow with us. It makes handling them easier.

Daughter's class pets are 4 colorful lizards. Their names are Geico, Louie, Lizzy, and Giovanni. Sometimes they sit on her shoulder or head when she does school work. Best part about these pets.....they are rubber. We got them at the dollar store and they are a really neat, life-like feeling but made of some rubber and they are so cute. She tries to remember to feed them each day...some plastic bugs she has. I just went over to their house (an inverted clear bowl) to see how they are doing....they are piled up on top of each other (body heat) around some plastic leaves and some rocks dd collected from outside. I see today they each have a colorful rubber worm in their mouth.

To answer your question...no, we really don't have a class pet, at least not a real one. Sorry to hear about your hamster. :(

How about one of those clear balls you put the hamster in and they roll all over the house. That would be cute. :D

So sorry about your hamster. We lost ours a few months ago at around the same age. :(

We have always enjoyed having an aquarium in addition to our inside dog and cat. We have occasionally invited a garden snail or toad in for a while, too. The ones you find in your yard present and opportunity to research the local habitat, the individual animal's needs among other things.
