We have a groovy poster that we found for $2 that shows the simple machines. We plan to "Scrap" what we learn about Simple Machines in a lapbook, of course. However, here is our snag.... I have been horrible lately at finding cool things on line for topics that we are directly searching for. Sure! I can find groovy things online, but it is usually dumb-luck and something that I stumbled upon. So, if you know of some groovy sites about "Simple Machines", please share! Thanks!
Here's some: http://www.mikids.com/Smachines.htm http://42explore.com/smplmac.htm http://www.kidskonnect.com/SimpleMachines/SimpleMachinesHome.html http://edtech.kennesaw.edu/web/simmach.html http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Machines-Starting-Science-Deborah/dp/1550743996 http://www.kathimitchell.com/simpmach.html
we're studying simple machines right now!!! And it REALLY is fun!!! Check your library for the "How Things Work" videos. They're kind of silly, but my kids enjoy them! We're using "Great Science Adventures: The World of Tools and Technology". Plus, we've got all kinds of books from the library. So far, we've studied the incline plane, wedge, screw, lever. You can do lever experiements at a playground on the seesaw! How close do you (the load) have to be to the fulcrum to have your youngest child lift you? Right now, Phillip, who is first grade, is defining everything he sees in relationship to levers! Also, simple machines would make a GREAT Lap Book!
Yes! We have one of those books, the how things work books! Also if you have a 99 cent store near you they have science books for 99cents of course! I am doing a double science with my kids, testing seeds for what grows easily and what not so we can get our garden going.... So far you can grow cucumbers in a baggie on the window to leaf stage! We transplanted them yesterday and are waiting to see if they survived the night out doors! I found a great book on plants and how they grow ! Its funny, because I am teaching them so much outside the regular school work, by seasons basically because they dont always follow our weather plan in his books. I am having fun ! Just as an idea for Simple machines.. make a little catapolt! It can be small as tossing a ping pong ball and the kids will be excited about it!
There's also "How Things Work" DVD/Videos. They're put out by Schlessinger Media. I've found just about everything done by that company to be excellent!
My kids are a little bit older, but we watch a show everyday called "How it's made" on Discovery. It is pretty cool. They show how lots of different things are made and work. For example, last week we watched how they make an RV, manequins, needles, firetrucks, aluminum cans, gummie candy, blown glass, Trombones....just about anything. YOu never know wht they are going to be making each day. Oh...ds just reminded me of a cool one we saw. It was fish farming. He said it was gross and cool at the same time! LOL anyway, that doesn't really help you, but just thought I would share!
Schlessinger Media that Jackie mentioned is dynamite. They have a barrel of good videos on many different subjects. We have a video of theirs called Physical Science for Children - All About Simple Machines. It has a teacher's guide with it.
My only complaint about Schlessinger is that I can't get their catalog sent to me. I'd love to have it, so I know specifically what videos to ask for at my library! They only send them out to schools and libraries.
I know them! Did you klnow that every video has a corresponing activity with it thatyou can print off their website? It is true! DO some digging. If youneed a direct link, just ask!
All five of us LLLLOOOOOVVVEEEEE that show! All of the Discovery Chanels, and all of the history channels and all of the "Halmark, Family, and Nasa channels that we have MORE than make up for the HBOs, Showtimes and other channels that we do not subscribe to. ANd Totally make cable WORTH it for us!
Here, babe. Their full website, should be about as good as thier print catalog, eh....? http://www.libraryvideo.com/sm/sm_home.asp Here is a search page for them... http://www.libraryvideo.com/search.asp
I wish our library had educational videos. They only have a small collection of feature films. We're moving to a larger city in late summer, so maybe they'll have a good collection!
Well moving made the difference for us! We lived in the middle of nowhere, now we are in the thick of it, right outside Houston... of course, houtson and surrounding areas are kinda like Newy York and New Jersey.... there is no open space between the cities.... anyway.... The libraries here, whooooop the pants off the other county's library for sure! hahaha!
Here is their main website page: http://www.libraryvideo.com/sm/sm_home.asp Here is a direct link to a video I found tonight at my library...... as an example: Read instructions below.... http://www.libraryvideo.com/product.asp?mscssi If you scan down, on this page, to the bottom, you should see: Teacher's Guide Available: Download Now Curriculum Correlation Documents Available NEW! The documents are PDF files that you open with Adobe Reader. Most browsers have it already, if yours does not, you can get it free from Adobe.com
Yes, that's the video I showed my kids, or rather, one of them! We also saw screws, pulleys, inclined planes, levers, etc. They really are quite funny!
