hi! my 4 yo wanted to learn to read, so i bought "teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons". i like parts of it, but it seems redundant. she already knows how all the letters sound, but does not know which are vowels and that they make long and short sounds, things like that. i have found myself skipping ahead in the book - she can read the three letter words. i'm not sure whether to finish the book or to move onto something else. i thought of buying the abeka kindergarten Language Arts/ Phonics books (i've read good things about their language arts, regardless of how i feel about traditional hs'ing).

does anyone have any thoughts on this? should i just continue on with the book, even though parts of it are boring for her, or move onto something else?

If it's boring for her then move on. I wouldn't use that book nor would I purchase Abeka for a 4yr old, but that's me. Have you thought about using ETC, Bob Books, computer games, laying out magnetic letters and putting words together, leapfrog videos or other items from them. Maybe look around for preschool reading games. If you go to CBD then you can look around at their preschool readers, they have lot of nice books.

okay, i am going to show my ignorance here, but...

    What is ETC?
i will google Bob Books here in a minute. :)
    What is CBD?

it never occurred to me she could learn to read without a book/curriculum...how does she learn the rules (like silent e's, eat is "eet" and not "eAt", etc.? there are so many i know i can't remember them all...this is all so overwhelming. :? thanks for your input! i really can use it.

She can TOTALLY learn to read without a curriculum! Please try other things, let them explore all the possibilities of the world around them. This would not be holding them back at all, it would open up so much more in the areas of reading, spelling and language. Also with the techy world we live in, it's not too early to let her play on the computer, kids pick it up very quickly.

    ETC (Explode the Code)

    Bob Books

    CBD (Christian Book Distributors)

Nora Gaydos -There are also printables to go along with the books.

    ABC's -Computer fun!

Star Fall -Computer fun! They also have printables to go along with the books

Leap Frog -Shop around for Leap Frog videos they are the BEST! (Also, I in no way support sticking them in front of the tv, we don't even have cable here. These videos are really good.)

CBD is an online book store. You can purchase ETC from. You can look other places as well, ebay, RR, Amazon.

btw it's been talked about on here a bit, if you do a board search you may find other things as well here is one thread.

Don't worry so much about the "rules" yet, most children just all into a natural, gradual step, once you learn the cvc and long vowels, I think the rest just come naturally. (for a lot of children that is) For some it does come much later though. My dd did not read until she was about 8, now she's going to be 10 and reading at about an 8th grade level. My ds just started reading about three months ago, he is 8, and he is already at a 3.5 grade level. My 6 year old is still not reading, but he starting to get the CVC words, hopefully it will be soon, but seeing how late my other two read, I'm not worried. You could also just teach the phonograms and that would help with the ee, ea, or, ir, ur type words.

    HTH.

What is wrong with this book? I ordered it after reading reviews on homeschoolreview.com. It hasn't arrived yet but I am excited about using it. Now you have me scared:confused:

There's nothing wrong with the book :) I just started it with my ds4 (5 in 2 weeks) because he was begging to do a "reading lesson" I think it's wonderful. He's learning well. We've just finished lesson 7.

My oldest two (dd7 and ds6) learned consonant sounds from the Explode the Code Primers and followed up with Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. This guy just didn't fit that "plan."

I guess it all just depends on how your child learns. You may find that it just doesn't work for yours.

    Hope that helps

If you are sure that you *need* to buy something, or are worried about "rules" you could look into Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. I love it! My older two both were beginning CVC words when we started so I had to skip the first 45 lessons. AND I skipped lessons when I found that they already knew the rule.

    Don't stop using it!

It is redundant at first. But you see why the later you get in the book. In the beginning they have to say words slowly over and over. But this is because later, that's how they are taught to sound out the word. Each letter is sounded out slowly, so that when it's said slowly together, it actually sounds like the word. It's amazing. Instead of them sounding out the word all choppy, it teaches them to sound it out in a smooth way. She says the word on the first try, becuase when she sounds it out, she's actually just saying it slowly. I think that it's a great program!! And you shouldn't skip. There is a deliberate point to each step. You won't realize this until hindsight, trust me! I felt the same way.

i just reviewed the book tonight, and noticed it did look like it was really "going somewhere". i felt like she was getting bored, but as we sound out words, when i tell her to sound them out slowly, she DOES actually do much better. i think we will continue on with it for a while and see how it goes. and i am also planning to use some of the suggestions listed earlier.

thanks everyone so much for your help and encouragement! :D
