We have been using 100 EZ lessons for my 6 year old Dd. She's doing great with it.. But now that we are on lesson 60 she doesn't want to do a complete lesson. She's fine until she sees the story and then she freaks out. She doesn't want to do it anymore. I think it's a little overwhelming to her since it's getting so long now. And the fact that they want her to repeat the reading is a problem. Anyone had this problem?? I don't know what to do. She's done so well with it. I don't want to abandon it. I would really rather modify the way she does the program.. But i don't know what to do. Any help would be great! Thanks

You guys are good, we only made it to lesson 20 I think! LOL!!!

The important thing is, if this approach is no longer working for your daughter, change approaches.

Maybe take a break from the book and work with her to read library books that SHE picks out. Even if she picks a level or two ahead, let her work them out. Doesn't mean abandon completely, or switch to every other day, or something like that - and do enjoyable reading in between.

I think it's important to STOP doing something that could make reading an unpleasant experience for her. You want her to enjoy reading, not dread it! :)

I have 3 kids - who all love to read - and it's where they gain most of their knowledge. I know with all three, when the process of learning became painful, or unpleasant, I backed off and did something different for a while. It's worked with all three. (Okay, the last one's still in the learning process, but when she gets frustrated, we stop and move onto something else....).

    :) HTH.

We didn't make it as far as any of you. Words from one of my dd's were "please don't ever take that book out again" LOL.
We used Explode the Code as our complete phonics for both my older girls and that worked well.

When my kids don't enjoy something I set it aside. I like to school to fun and enjoyable as possible. Reading I want them to love and not be a struggle or something that brings tears.
Just from my older dd's experience, she hated to read when we did our 1st and 2nd grade years. This year she is doing 3rd and every time I look at her she has a book in her hand. She loves to read. This has trickled down to my 2nd dd who now always has a book in her hand too.

    Good luck to you.

I used 100 Easy Lessons. We took breaks from it a few times, but then she started on it at 3yo. I also did not finish the book completely mostly because she did not like the story part much either (probably around that same lesson). I think I put it aside for good around Lesson 80 to 85, but she was reading on her own and progressing, so it had served its purpose; at four years old, she was reading at a 2nd grade level.

My suggestion is to put it aside for a couple of weeks or more and see if your daughter is reading and progressing well with easy reading books. If not, try backing up a few lessons and try it again. It might not be so much that she dislikes it as she dislikes the routine of it also, so you could try breaking it up by doing the story later on in the day.

This morning she begged to do her lesson. She read the story without blinking an eye. I told her we would only read the story once. She did her lesson and did very well. She was fine and took off to play as soon as she finished.

Most likely we won't finish the book. I would like to get to lesson 80 though. We are on lesson 62 now so not many more to go. BUT if she starts dreading me bringing the book out again I'll put it away. We are going to start reading more books from the library. She has the basics down and will learn the rest naturally. I'm just still stuck in the public school mindframe I guess.. Trying to overcome that now that we have gone through 3 years of homeschooling. But it's not easy.
