My ds will be celebrating his 16th birthday this month. We had planned on some type of party with close friends, but since we moved two months ago, there are no friends to invite. As a surprise to all the kids, good friends from TX are coming to visit that weekend. They may (hopefully) arrive on his birthday, but I'm not sure yet. We still want to make his day very special. The girls and I have decided to get up early and decorate the house with "16 things we love about you" or "16 wishes for you" -something like that. I'm thinking that we'll take ds out for lunch and somehow leave a key for our friends to come in while we are gone. Timing will have to work out for that one. Any other ideas for him? We can't spend too much money, because we will be traveling to TN the next weekend to visit family.

Have the girls help you make 16 cup cakes and lay them out in the number pattern. Use his favorite frosting or candies to decorate them. Put them on a platter or thick cardboard you can kind of keep out of the way until you leave for lunch........ then you forget to get your lipstick or something and have to go in the house rightg as everyone else is getting in the car and to put the platter on the table so its there when you get home.
ask his friends from his old town to E-mail him E-cards or post on his face book page or what ever Birthday wishes (I'm sure a lot of them will anyway).... but its nice to get those.

you can always have the waitresses or waiters at the birthday lunch sing to him.... it seams like kids enjoy that more than adults anyway. or if you can call ahead and tell the resturant that its his 16th birthday maybe they have ways to surprize him........ pizza with the pepperonies or toppings in a 16 or something simular.......

Love the cupcake idea, and my dd13 is really into baking these days. She'll love to help with that! I thought of messaging some of his friends to ask them to remember him on his birthday.

I always ask the waiter/waitress to sing to them. The thing is they are old enough to request it on our birthdays now!!
