I would like to purchase a reading program for my 2nd grader. I like BJU, but it's expensive, however I could purchase used. Any others? I looked at R&S and I'm not sure my son would like the stories after viewing the sample. I love that it's Bible based, Bible stories, but I'm not sure he'd find interest in those. Looking for Recommendations. Also, can you please tell me what is needed for the program you suggest? I know many programs include a bunch of extras that aren't really needed. I just want readers and questions to either do in a workbook or orally.
I'm not sure what you are looking for, I'm not really familiar with either of those because we do not use Christian material so I don't look at it, but if you are looking for a list of readers for your student, just pick books based on his interest and let him read them, maybe discuss them with him or have him do some form of narration (doesn't always have to be retelling verbally.. could be drawings, posters, brochures, dramatizations, etc). Are you looking for something with grammar and writing and spelling in it? If so, have you looked at McRuffy?
I'm looking for an actual reading program, rather than books and talking about them. We have a lot of books, but my son is so stubborn. He knows how to read very well, but he pitches a fit when it's time to read a book. When he reads stories in a text form (book full of readers) he gladly does and answers the questions!
I would look at some of the anthologies from Scott Foresman they have free worksheets online to go with them My kids are quite the opposite, they would much rather read a thin book or a fun book that they pick over reading something that feels like "school".
