We use a box curriculum for my daughter (2nd grade). We've completed the spelling portion but won't finish the remainder of the curriculum until late spring. I don't want to let spelling languish -- I'd rather march on and have her do some additional spelling work. Unfortunately I can't purchase just the third grade spelling component without starting the rest of the 3rd grade language arts. I'm looking for a standalone spelling book/set of exercises/online resources, etc. appropriate for third grade. Great sages of all things homeschooling, any suggestions for something that's worked for you?
Explode the Code or Wordly Wise... these are workbooks. Spelling City is online and has free activities.
I kind of like A Reason for Spelling, we aren't using it this year, but my boys did for the last two years. It does have Bible verses so that can be a pro or a con depending on your beliefs. It's a workbook and fairly cheap. I like that it has different activities to do with the words. Spelling City has sample lists by grade and that would be free.
This is also a free curriculum: http://www.zaner-bloser.com/media/zb/zaner-bloser/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html
I haven't used it, but Spell By Color is free. http://jettedgames.com/spelling.htm If you aren't opposed to spending a little, my 4th grader is loving Sequential Spelling. http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/SS1REV/c967555a4a87b0c6bd8dae10 (disregard the fact that Rainbow lists it as Grade 2, I think everyone no matter what grade begins with level 1....although I'm not completely sure on that)
Evan Moor Daily Spelling is good too. I use the free Zaner Blower linked above and there is also a free one at k12reader.com
I really appreciate all of the suggestions -- thank you! I took a look at spellingcity.com. Their website is like being at a laser light show. There's so much going on that it's impossible to figure out how to proceed. I clicked something and it took me to a paid service that sells video games and other media. Argh. I'm checking out Sequential Spelling. Looks like it may be a match -- thanks!
