Thought this was interesting story. I know the government and now our city is thinking of "A 4 day work week for their workers. USAA the company my husband works for used to have this option then they took it away.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080724/us_nm/usa_gasoline_schools_dc

It was soooo wonderful for us when we used to have 3 day weekends he got a lot more done. Now they are thinking of letting some workers from USAA work from home. They are considering my husband on his team "Crosses fingers" it would save us money going into city. Right now I think we are doing around $370 a month on gas

I think in the UP they did this because of budgets. I just saw on our local news that a county building (courts & what not) are thinking of moving to this as well because of the money it would save their workers & the county because of energy costs!!!

I heard that one city in Alabama is going to save $100,000 a year of their transportation budget by going to a 4-work week. I think I've heard that some schools are considering it, too.

Our courthouse went to 4 days a week the beginning of summer, and said the saving on utilities are amazing.

They are also talking of some sort of public transportation that will go from town to town around here. Right now we have no bus system anywhere near here.

I know the large hospital here in town is talking of running a bus around all the surrounding towns for their workers. I don't see how the schedule would work out, but hey if they can figure it out it would be great.

So are those four days run longer to make up the time? I find this interesting, because our governor wants year-round school across the state.

I find it amusing that I am criticized by aquatances who are teachers because we run a 4 day week.

This was the best part of the article to me:

Wait! You mean kids actually do better the less they are in government schools?!!! I though for sure a 24 hour school was the answer to all society's problems.

I saw the city employees on tv talking about the 4 day work week they are really excited, it will motivate them they say, I agree. Takes awhile to get used to the 10 hour week but sometimes they do that in overtime anyways.

As for school not sure what the parents that work would do with the kids during that one extra day. I see a lot of kids being home by themselfs because they won't be able to afford a babysitter.

I wondered what those parents who use school as daycare would do, too. I certainly think the kids could learn just as much in 4 days.

Dh usually goes to 4-10s (that's what we call it around here)in the summer. You still get the same hours, but a 3 day weekend which is very nice. I haven't heard of any companies or goverment offices talking about that here though.

I loved the part Aime quoted about better performance. I also liked when they said if they went back to 5 days weeks they'd be run outta town! LOL! Did you notice the only concern parents had was what to do with their kids? No education concerns at all - only what will I do? how will I find childcare? How about raising your own kid? What a novel idea.

I agree about improved performance. My DH holds a government job and they've allowed a 4-day workweek for years now. One thing his department also permits is teleworking one day a week. So he only goes into the office three days a week now, and we LOVE it!

Our ps is on a four day week schedule to save money. We have always followed their schedule and enjoyed a three day weekend. Of course that meant my ds' had to double up to make up for Fridays but they loved it that way.

The schools here are on the 4 day school week. The kids go to the boys and girls club and other places on fridays.

Now I don't like it for the kids that struggle to keep up with a 5 day week end up with less of a chance with a 4 day week. JMO

    O/t

Totally O/T...but tell your husband, "Good job." I've been a USAA member for over twenty years, and they are an awesome company! :)

The part of Arizona where my parents live is considered a farming or ranching community. The students in that area have a four day week. My brother has since graduated but he loved it! He would use that day to go riding with his friends.

We have a few schools here in my area of Arizona that have only 4 days a week, though they are all high schools! I suppose for high schoolers this would be ok, but I'd worry with the lower grades. Maybe the fifth day could be a catch up day for the children that need extra attention??? That would be a good idea!

Where my parents live, the school is K-12. All the students attend four days a week.
