My son is in 6th grade and is very smart, but struggling in math. He likes video games and I thought if I could find some software that taught math in the form of a game, that it might help him in some areas he is struggling with. I went looking online and to my surprise, I could not find anything like this to buy. I found some old Jump Start software from the Knowledge Adventure that was designed for Windows 98 back in the 1990's, but nothing modern. I remember buying some software from Princeton Review, called Middle School Edge for my oldest child back in the 1990's that really helped her, I can't find it anywhere and doubt it would even run on a modern computer anyways.

I am just wondering if there is newer modern stuff out there that teach math in the form of video game? I am looking for stand alone (no internet required) PC or Android software. Thanks for the help.

That's tough. So much is being shifted to the cloud. It might help if you searched for specific skills instead of general "math." You just might find something downloadable.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it seems these days like we are being forced to allow our kids access to the internet. As the director of a life counseling center that has dealt with countless young people who's lives have been destroyed by the internet, I have seen the evil that lurks on the internet that is intentionally targeting our children and the permanent damage that can occur to a child's mind in just one second. I can say with all certainty that letting your child have access to the internet is no different then dropping them off on a street corner at midnight in the worst crime ridden part of town and living them their alone. In fact, it is worst and more dangerous then that. No parent in their right mind would drop their child off like that, even to drive around the block, but they will let have their kids have an internet connected device without blinking and let them play on it for hours, exposing them to to every evil criminal in the online world that, in a lot of cases, is targeting them specifically. One wrong click for just a second and they are irreversibly scared and damaged for life.

Personally, as a professional that has dealt with the damage that internet can do to children, I feel that any parent that would allow their kids access to the internet in any form (other then physically standing there watching their every move, which is impossible for most parents), is unfit to be a parent, and should have their kids taken away. You might think that is excessive, but would you let your child drive down the interstate highway without a drivers licenses? Yet many parents, will let their children drive on the internet super highway unrestricted.

When my kids complain about this rule and say that I don't trust them; I just say: "I trust you, but I don't trust the internet. Would you want me to drop you off in the worst part of town at night and leave you there alone? Would you think that would be a responsible thing to do as a parent?" Of course they always answer, "NO!". Then I say, "Then why are you asking me to expose you to the worst criminal elements in the world?" When they say, "But all of my friend's parents let them have access to the internet!". I say, "Just because their parents are irresponsible and don't care about them does not make them right. If they let them drive by themselves on the interstate highway, do you think I should let you do that too?" My kids have never won this argument and have always admitted that I am right. LOL!

Education is important, but not as important has my kids mental safety. Most homeschoolers chose to homeschool to get their kids away from bad influences, and then invite the worst influences in the world into their home and hand it to their kids by letting them get on the internet. Makes no sense at all.

Yes, there is parental control software out there, but I have yet to find one that is 100% and that cannot be easily subverted. The only thing that is 100% safe is to not let them have access to the internet at all.

Well, I know you were looking for something "fun," but honestly, the best thing I did for my 12yo was switch him to Saxon. He's far, far more competent (for which I am grateful) and he learns almost 100% independently (well, he uses the book!). When he does come to me with questions, they are specific; it's not, "I don't get it," but rather, "I don't understand <this particular aspect> of <this type of question>."

Sometimes the solution is technology based... just old technology.

    I'm sure you'll find a solution.
