We have used Abeka Arithmetic since we started homeschooling in my oldest daughter's 4th grade year. She's done well with it and is finishing Abeka Arith 6 right now. Has anyone used Abeka's Basic Math 7? It looks extremely repetitive. I'm wondering if we could skip it and move on to Pre-Algebra.

I'm also wanting to research other programs for Pre-Algebra/Algebra and higher. If you have a program that has worked great and you love it, would you mind sharing?

    Thanks,
    Patty

Patty, we used A Beka's Basic Math 7. It is repetitive, but, it does prepare you for Pre-Algebra. You will notice that the Pre-Algebra is again repeptitive, but, about half way thru, it starts with Algebra. I did not take Pre-Algebra in school, so this helped me a lot. If you have never taken this yourself, it is the way to go, IMO. Hope this helps.

most 7th grade math is repetative it is made to remind the student of all that they have learned to be prepared for pre alg. If it is repetition I am not too worried but I alsoknwo 8th is more of the same, so I am jumping 7th going to 8th, then into ALG.

It really depends on the student. I personally skipped 8th grade math and went straight into Algebra 1...in hindsight, I wish that the Jr. High had made us skip 7th grade math and take pre-alg in 7th before they had the Honors class jump into Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

If you're pondering skipping 7th to move onto Pre-Alg, maybe have your student take a placement test and see how they score. I know my oldest will in all likelihood go from Horizons 6 to Pre-Algebra due to the scope & sequence used in Horizons.

After reading what I posted, I realized how crazy the post sounded.

What I was saying, in order to teach it, I was happy the way A Beka taught 7th grade math, it taught me very slowly, so I could teach Elijah - therefore, when he got to pre-algebra, again I was able to teach Elijah better.

If you are going to have to learn it before you teach it, A Beka is great!!!

We are totally skipping 7th grade math with TT an going to pre-algebra. It IS repetitive and my son would be bored to death. If your daughter does well with math - I'd just move ahead. you can always slow down if she gets confused.

My dd is in 9th and I am glad that we did 7th and 8th abeka. 7th and 8th really prepared them for 9th grade. I know that if we would have skipped either grade it would have been harder for her. But this all depends on your child. Abeka works for us.

with us Horizon math brings us to where 8th sos is so it works great! He will know most of what he is doing next year in 8th, math, so it will work out good for him.
But for the most part he is doing great, he just has to remember his formulas for geometry work

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to look at the text at the curriculum fair or at one of their displays and then decide. I don't want to make things harder for her down the road, that's for sure.

    Thanks again,
    Patty
