Can I brag? This past week at a local curriculum show, I obtained Spelling Power for next to nothing. (No, that's not my brag. ) DS8 is so far ahead in spelling, we've just been doing the vocab page in his books... and he finished the 4th grade ps spelling text I had just before Christmas. (He'd be in 3rd grade if in ps.) I've been casually looking around at spelling programs that have a big long list of words, that a kid can begin at whatever level they are and keep on going and going and going.... Spelling Power is, of course, perfect. So, it starts by having you give your child a 50-word quiz. It says you probably wont' have to do the whole list, because you stop when the child has missed 3 words in a row, or 4-6 in close proximity on the list. So we did this. He didn't miss any until number 29, and then didn't miss another one until number 41. He got 42 and 43 right, then missed 44, got 45, and missed 46 and 47. LOL Anyway. So he got 42 right out of 47 I asked him. According to the chart... and THIS is my brag... he's on an 8.7 grade level for spelling! Now, to really see where he starts in the list, etc etc etc, I have to give him the test for level H... and read the rest of the teacher pages. (It's half the book almost, and all I read was the Quick Start guide. But, like I said, we're in no rush.) Anyway. My almost-9yo son is on an almost high school level with his spelling!!
That's awsome! We use spelling power. I will have to say though, while the book put dd (1st grade) at 2nd grade 7th month for spelling, and started her on the first list. She's not retaining the words at all beyond the first review. I had to stop doing the daily tests because she just wasn't retaining the words. Funny thing though, I've given her the placement test again since the beginning of the school year just out of curiosity and it still places her higher. Yet the words on the lists that she should be on, while she can get them down by the end of the week, she doesn't remember them the next week.
AWsome! GOOD JOB! WEEE HOO! I love it when we realise they have learned beyond what we thought they did! and Kim don't let it get to you, just do the tests once a week and she will get the hang of retaining when she needs to. We use a dif program but my ds10 was not doign great with spelling last yea,r this year he gets them correct before finishing the weeks work in the Spelling we got. it has a page a day of work and that includes a test of Friday.
