    Melinda...

I got the 1st grade Liberty Mathematics for my son to see what it was like. IT is almost all addition and subtraction practice. It makes a great teacher resource for practice pages, but I didn't think it really focused on the other necessary skills for 1st. I'm not sure about kindergarten though. Just my two cents on it.

I have used Horizons and Scott Foresman. I liked both of them. This year we're trying out harcourt and I like them as well.

I am also selecting Kindergarten math curriculum. I have narrowed it down to Horizons Math and Singapore Math. Horizons seems more fun and easier to teach, but I like the fact that SM moves at a faster pace and (according to them) teaches the child to really think mathematically. These are both curriculums found in Cathy Duffy's "100 Top Picks For Homeschool Curriculum"

I am sticking with Saxon K Math. I like the hands on approach and the different skills it teaches. I also like that it goes through the 12th grade so I can use it all the way.

yes, we will probably end up with Saxon in High School math years.
Just because the private schools around her use it, an since Horizon does not go that high.

    I'm really liking Singapore.

Also , I know it has a super long name so far I only have one of the books but I LOVE "Professor B's Mathematics Power Learning for Children". When I do activities with Sami from it, it's like little lightbulbs pop on over her head!

    Hi Melinda..

There is a lot of math curriculum and really good ones ta boot! So you need to narrow down what you like.
Here is a list for you;)

Do I want hand holding? Hence looking for a teacher friendly manual?
Do I want it in color, black/white or does it matter?
The child I am choosing it for, has he/she presented a leaning toward math so that I might want to move at a more accelerated pace?
Or do I need something with lots of review?
How comfortable am I with tweaking lesson plans?

wow, Tina you have a good handle on all of the how to choose a style down! I never thought of it that way with my kids, up untill recently... it was all about what is the best I can get with what I have to spend!
Of course back in the day when we started we did look for a complete set up and AO has such a good set apeal... and I guess we did look at our son's abilities then because we chose Horizon because he was ahead of the level, but not a full year ahead we did not think....
So maybe we did think of those with out realizing it! Wow!
    ( grin)
Thanks for giving me something to think on!

    Hey Deena..

AND I HAVE MISSED YA'll!! Yep, I'm around for good.. We have experienced such growth in our area and at times I have had to help lots more newbies than it seems like we have veterans..

I am such a softie for them and WOW my leadership role has really been heavy for both me and Sheila this year.

They just COME A FLOCKING to us! And we both are managing as many of them as we can. Also, we just launched our website and are so excited about it. We both have so much more to add to it, there aren't enough hrs in the day to do it all.

So when that happens, I have to set priorities so when *I lead, I don't bleed*...;) Then its not fun or not a very good ministry.

Oh well, blah, blah, blah.........I'm glad i'm here too!

Yep, I hear ya!...Back when I started I wished I had organizations like Smoothing the Way in Texas that would have given me a reality check:p Its hard to choose from so much out there, but I promise you it does fit into categories and when we have basic learning styles and teaching styles, we can narrow about 3/4ths of it out of the way by developing our goals, doing our homework on our teaching/learning styles, time for teacher prep, and general confidence level, kwim?

I have a little leg up though in this area, because I teach the workshop on learning styles for Smoothing the Way each year and this is always one of my favorite topics.
