One of the local districts here in WA actually is now partnered with the Christa Mcauliffe Academy to provide tuition free alt. ed. for kids that are homeschooled. I tend to have my reservations about this but at the same time think that it is good that it is offered. I actually looked at CMA before for education but the cost was outrageous.... 3600/yr. 1st there was WAVA through a school district on the west side of the state (K12 curriculum) and now this CMA. Question???? what is everyone's opinion on these type of alt ed. programs?
I think any alternative education should be through a homeschooling program. I do not like the idea of the system working with my child in any way. Sometimes they do have great programs for children, but it welcomes them in to your private education and I wouldn't want to take that chance with their interference. Patty
Personally, I agree with Patty. After reading John Gatto's books on the Underground History of government schools, I am very skeptical and question their motivation in welcoming homeschoolers with the enticement of free curric. Of course you should do what you think is right for your family, just make sure you're asking a lot of questions first. Good luck.
Can you use parts of the curriculum and not others? I have recently stumbled onto some science projects at a k12 website - I assume it is the one used by the k12 curriculum? It was free, and I was able to download the useful stuff, and incorporate it into our lessons, which I thought was great.
