A judge’s decision in the South African country of Botswana should have Americans concerned over the influence of the United Nations and the potential violations of individual liberties that could result from including the United Nations. Four Seventh Day Adventist Church families in Botswana were judicially ordered to stop homeschooling their children and send them to public school instead.

The decision came about as a result of Botswana’s accession to the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child. Even though the judge found that the home-schooled children were properly cared for and well-educated, the UNCRC nonetheless determined that the “best interests of the child” involve state authority in the upbringing and education of children.

In the United States, Mike Donnelly of the Home School Legal Defense Association reacted to the judge’s decision: “HSLDA has warned about the danger of the UNCRC to homeschooling families. It gives almost unlimited powers to judges to decide how children should be raised. We are asking our 85,000 member families to contact the Botswana Embassy and Office of the President of Botswana to protect these families’ basic rights to decide what is best for these children.”

I pray that the US never ratifies this with the UN. I know earlier on Obama mentioned it was embarrassing that we hadn't already. Yikes!

It is so scary how our freedoms are being taken away and we don't always have an answer. I sometimes wish we could develop our own country and secede from the union (I live in Texas and I think we are the only state that "can" secede). I don't really think that will happen.

I have thought what would I do if homeschooling were criminalized. At this point, I would let my son drop out at the age of 16 (which he will be in December). I would rather have him get his GED than go to PS.

    Heartathome,

Why can't you be located in Texas? I would love to be a part of your group. Your website is wonderful and very organized. Maybe you could start an online group for like-minded people who live too far away to visit in Florida.

"Yea, they are properly cared for, and very well educated..good job! But...we just can't keep track of them like we want to, and they aren't under our conrol at all. We can't really have free thinkers out there so....please hand them over to us." That's all I hear! Hm, if homeschooling were criminalized I don't know what I would do.

Canada signed it in 1990. I have much more freedom to home educate my children in the province where I live than many states in the USA.

This is alarming. Homeschooling was only beginning to be popular here in my country and I just this would not be a deterrent to our freedom anytime soon.
