I used bout half the book for my first son- who would not even attempt to read until he was 6 years old. He loved it, and I do not know if he would have had as much onfidence without the book.

My second son would not look at it, he learned to read on his own, he actually told me he would learn to read when he was 5, and literally the week of his 5th birthday, I found him reading a book out loud to himself.

I would suggest you try it since you already have it. You can continue to read to him and have him follow along, maybe running your finger under the words to see that is how they are pronounced. But if you find that it is not working, don't force it. Like I said, we only needed to use about half of the book, and we acutally did not use most of the "script" either, I just went over the basic pronunciation rules for each lesson before we started.

Thanks all. It is still going well, we are on lesson 66 and he still enjoys it. We have definitely made it our own and it seems to be working. I think he is doing great. It is such a kick when he laughs as he is reading. It is so neat to see him reading and really comprehending it as well. I really appreciate all the tips and kind words. :)

I bought the book when I ordered my curriculum. My DS has a reading disability so I was looking for something that was phonics based to help him out. Even though he's an older child (almost 11), he still struggles with the simplest of words (thanks PS:roll:).Anyway, DD1 is entering kindergarten next year so I thought it would be something we could do over the summer as a family. After I reviewed the book, I knew that I made the right decision. I just hope my kids feel the same way!

I got about half way through with my son before switching. He was making progress with the book but it wasn't translating to other materials and his understanding didn't seem too deep.

We switched to Dancing Bears and the difference has been amazing. The books are all available for viewing online if you're interested.
