We had frozen salisbury steaks, mashed potatoes and veggies tonight. I have a good bit of potatoes and gravy left over (but no meat).

I also have a pie crust in the fridge that needs to be used. I was thinking of tomorrow night, browning some ground beef and putting it and the gravy into the pie crust and topping with potatoes, kind of like a shepherd's pie, but with a bottom crust???

I've never done that before, though. Anyone have a real recipe for some type of ground meat pie? I was wondering if the meat and gravy could be folded inside the crust, kinda like one of those big Cornish pasty type pies they have in England. Never made that before, either, though!

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I never make meat pie from a recipe. I just do as you suggested, brown the meat, mix with gravy and maybe some frozen veggies (a pea, bean, carrot mix), dump it into a dish and top with mashed potatoes or biscuit dough. I've never done it with a pastry bottom but I imagine it would be the same idea.

It's the simplest way in the world to use up leftovers.

If you're not feeling brave then I imagine a search on allrecipes.com for "meat pie" would give you some great recipes.

Thanks, Dawn. It helps to know you've done that before...I'll let you know how it turns out.

I'm trying to be better about using up our leftovers. Now I need to hit allrecipes.com and try to find a banana bread or muffin recipe that uses oil instead of butter or margarine (out of both). :)

    Tator Tot Tamale Pie

    2 lb hamburger
2-15 oz cans of tomato sauce
1 can whole kernel corn-drained (reserve the corn juice, and let your kids drink it)
    1/2 onion
    1/2-1 Tbsp chili powder
salt, garlic and pepper to taste

Brown hamburger with onion, salt, pepper and garlic to taste.
Pour in tomato sauce, corn and chili powder and simmer for 15 minutes.
Pour into casserole pan, place tator tots on top.
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until tator tots are done.

    Enjoy!

I have a super great friend that is Ukranian (lives in Canada) and shares some great recipes I remember she gave me one once that would be good for what you want, she said go ahead and use your pie crust and it will will work good.

    Here is that recipe.

    Perishky
    (dough)
    2 cups of flour
    1 tsp of baking powder
    1 tsp of salt
    1 tbsp of shortining
    1/2 cup of milk
    1/2 cup of cream
    1 egg

    (filling)
    1 onion chopped
    1/2lb of ground beef
    1 cup of mashed potatoes
    salt & pepper

Filling- In a skillet fry ground beef and onion until browned. Drain if needed and place in a medium size mixing bowl. Add the mashed potatoes and mix well. Set aside.

Dough- Sift the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Rub the shortining into the flour using a fork until lightly blended. Add the milk, cream and egg stirring until all is moistened. If the dough seems to soft add 1-2 more tbsps of flour. Place the dough in the refridgerator for 20 minutes. On a lightly floured surface roll the dough to an 1/8 inch thickness, using a glass or cookie cutter cut out 21/2 inch circles. Reroll the scraps using all the dough. Place 1 tbsp of the filling in the center of each circle. Fold in half bringing the edges together, pinch to seal. Place Perishky side by side on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400*F for 20-25 minutes or till lightly browned.

    yields approx. 45 Perishky

Thanks for the recipes, ladies! I'll have to try all of them.

Hey, that's cool to see that Ukrainian one. My great-grandmother was Ukrainian and I don't have many of her recipes. I'd like to imagine her making something like that.

    Thanks!

We make a shepherds pie that we all love:

    1 lb of hamburger
3 cups of mashed potatoes - prepared
    1 cup peas
    1 cup corn
    butter
    pepper
    (these measurements are estimates)

cook and season meat to taste - put in bottom of a baking dish. If the veggies are frozen, then thaw/cook them a bit in the microwave, then pour on top of the meat. Spread mashed potatoes on top of it all. put a pat of butter on top and sprinkle with pepper. Cook in oven for 15-20 minutes (to cook veggies and let all ingredients kinda cook together) then remove and serve! We like this on cold nights served with warm bread.
