We just started looking for geocaches again. We had gotten hooked last year, but then it got too hot here, and the crawling, slithering, biting things came out, so we put it off for a bit. We just got s Geomate Jr, and are so excited to start up again:lol:
lol, what is geocache? A couple from our church does this and just recently came home from a Carribean Cruise and shows pictures of her husband finding these (what ever it is) while he was there... now I'm really curious
We went searching for a few probably a year ago as well. My son asks every so often to go looking again, but he of course remembers during the week and never remembers to remind us to go out on the weekend. I think it was the heat that put a damper on it for us as well.
We dont geocache, but we do letterboxing (the old-fashioned version). We haven't been in a while. We need to do that!
Here is a website where you can get some info on geocaching http://www.geocaching.com/ We would like to start letterboxing, did you get a stamp made, or did you make one yourself? Is there a website you go to to find them? The downside of geocaching around here is that I think most of the people geocaching are adults, and so we get a lot of micro geocache, which are not as fun for the boys, and a lot harder for them to find. Actually, they don't seem to keep up with them and quite a few were "lost" so we could not find them at all At least with the letterboxing there would be a stamp in their book
We made our own stamps. The kids all have their own stamp & journal, too. We just made a stamp to go with our trail name.
There are stamp carving materials available at craft stores. We got ours at Hobby Lobby. You carve the stamp in an eraser-like block. I've used a thick white one and a softer, thinner pink one. The thinner block was easier to carve (good for a first attempt), but not as durable as the thicker ones. You'll need carving tools and a utility knife. I just bought very basic tools, because I'm not great at carving. We just wanted an original stamp. I just drew a design on the clock & cut it out. Just remember to carve around the part you want to show! Here's a great tutorial.
I don't but I have a friend stateside who LOVES it. We may look into it when we return to the states. Sounds like it be fun to do while camping.
We keep saying we are going to start and have looked up some in our area. There are actually quite a few within walking distance. I had not heard of letterboxing before, but that sounds cool too. I'll have to look for that.
My dh got our kids into geocaching and they love it! My dh always looks up the ones in our area that are not the micro ones so the kids can leave something in the box.
