yep! Right in the middle of it!!! Fortunately we live almost at the top of a big hill, and none of our trees fell over Many people we know were without power for a week, and lots got flooded in, although no-one we know personally was flooded. The kids went and saw the ship stranded at Newcastle beach a couple of weeks ago when they were with their grandparents - very dramatic. The storms were really full on, and everything is really squelchy, but the clean up has been fast. For us life just continues, kwim? The farmers were hardest hit, and they are still waiting for the flood waters to receed as we drive around there are lakes where paddocks used to be...
I actually don't know....all day every day just about for about 2 weeks now (although the sun is shining today ) I do know that the dams in our area (our town water/drinking water supply) were down to 12% of capacity, and they are now up to 20%, which is great. We have been on water restrictions here so long I can't remember what it was like before, but there will need to be even more rain before any of that changes I guess.
squelchy - like squishy? the sound and feeling of walking on completely water logged earth paddocks - ?fleids - large grassy areas where sheep, cows and horses live, usually seveal acres large, fenced off, parts of farms
Karen... sounds like you all been without water for along time... Is that commen for your area? I am glad to hear you all are ok..
Kris - Australia is a country that experiences drought regularly - you don't get to be the driest continent on earth for nothing! One of our famous poems describes australia as a country of "droughts and flooding rains", which is very true. That said, I think this drought has been longer and worse than any in recent memory. Deanna - that is so funny - it always surprises me which words don't translate! If you look on this link, there is a picture of the beached ship. dh tells me the video links are updated regularly, so don't know how long it will be there for. If you explore the smh site, you will find video news about the attempts to refloat it too. http://media.smh.com.au/?sy=smh&category=Breaking+News&rid=29363&source=smh.com.au%2F
A friend of ours, who has been working with Campus Crusade for Christ in Australia, recently returned to the US for a visit. Last Sunday he sang the "Bilibong" song for us. It could have been another language! I love the word, "Squelchy" also!
Do you mean 'waltzing matilda'?! "Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, Under the shade of a coolibah tree......"
