Yesterday we stepped away from the computer work and back to our old school workbooks and doing stuff together and I have to say that it was so nice. I feel like with the computer work we are just always in our separate areas and don't have as much interaction.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with computer programs. But it was nice for us to "be together" again learning. I am thinking next year we might go back to workbooks. I think we need that right now.

But it was just such a relief to have a nice day of learning TOGETHER! :) I had to share.

Autumn, I feel the same way about computer learning - nothing wrong with it in small doses for particular purposes, but I wouldn't want to be tied to it all day for all the schoolwork.

I'm glad you had a really good day!

We are the same way as well! I have gotten to where I dont pull out the computers at all for the kids. When daddy gets home he will do it.

I agree here too, we have done some computer work this year and now I am trying to get some more paper work done for next year. Doing a lot more hands on trips type of enhancements instead of just looking thingsup on the internet too!
I like the idea of computer work but I don't like the connection. Lol, it brings us great information but it draws us away from one another.

So far my kids dont' do any schoolwork on the computer. My ds has a few learning games online but he only gets to play them when he earns them. I hate having that disconnected feeling between our family when too much time is spent either on the computer, watching tv or playing video games.

For now Dashawn is doing a online school part time, but this is just to keeps us going for this year. When I pulled him out a month ago, I didn't really have anything planed. Things in ps just got to bad for him to continue. But for next year I plan to do more unit studies and a workbook approach. I feel like the computer is there to help us stay afloat right now, it is not a long term schooling solution for us.

We only use the computer one at a time. While one child plays educational review games on the computer I work one on one with the other. Later we switch. I would feel disconnected if they were all working on the computer at the same time. Glad you found what works for you.

I appreciate all of your insights. I was thinking that our school should join the 21st century by doing more computer stuff. Now I feel it is okay doing just what we do, which is very little computer stuff.

We only use the computer for research of a topic (the kids computer is directly behind mine, so I can see exactly what sites they are on) and for typing up the occasional report or compiling a power point presentation. Otherwise, we school it old school too! :)

One thing I fear is bad typing skills ( like mine lol) if they starting typing before being able to learn the right way.

Oh Autumn, that is so special for both you and the kiddos! I agree, the computer is great at seperating famlies, in so many ways. I know I am guilty of spending way more time on the computer than I should, then turn around and put the kids on it to do work.
