We are planning on using BJU math next year for 1st grade. This year we used Horizons for kindergarten, and while an excellent math program, its just not for my daughter.
So I'm here looking for opinions:DThe pros and cons of BJU math.Is it fairly user friendly? At or above grade level?I know I had a lot more questions when I first started this post, but my mind went blank:oops:I would appreciate hearing about others experiences with BJU math though.

I switched from Saxon 1 that I used last year to Bob Jones 1st grade math for this year. My daughter just didn't do well at all with Saxon last year. She's very visual, and the black and white/no pictures thing of Saxon didn't work for her.

I have LOVED using Bob Jones this year. It revolves around the story of a clown and his seal who are trying to find a job. Each unit has to do with a job. For example, the unit we're currently doing is fractions, and the job he was looking at was a bakery. Last unit was farming, and we were studying time [clocks, calendars, etc.].

I think it's very easy to use. My daughter has made A's on every test she's taken so far except one. What I've liked about it for her is that it includes counters on the worksheets themselves to help her with her adding and such. She needs that.

Honestly, I think the curriculum overall is probably a bit easier than others, but it seems to be covering the same ground as our Saxon math did. The pages are colorful, and the storyline engaging and nicely tied to the lessons.

Thank you:D Thats what I was wondering. My daughter is very visual, she needs to see exactly what it is she needs to do.I think that the stories will help hold her interest as well. She tends to get frustrated easily if something isn't holding her interest. Some days I feel like banging my head against a wall, lol. She will do a problem, look out the window for ten minutes,do another problem.:?It sounds like BJU just may be what she needs.

My daughter on Saxon was painful; she took forever to do a problem. We were a year ahead, though, so that may have been part of the problem.

The Bob Jones version has made such a turn-around for her in math. There are days when she wants to do worksheet after worksheet. She sees the pictures on the next page and wants to move on. I have actually had to force her to do one per day [I don't want to get ahead and miss reviewing information that will help her retain stuff].

Anyway, I hope it's a good fit for your daughter as well. Mine hated math before but really likes it now. And, frankly, so do I! LOL

hmm, howhigh does bju math go? anyonehave a quick view of the pages? It sounds good... I have a year between when I have math for ds and need to fill in 7th grade math. Its a review year so is 8th so I could just jump but , if BJU is relatively well priced, he will be my only homeschooler next year and something new could be good for us!
I will be watching this tread closely!

TMom, you can go to BJU site and view the pages.

We used BJ last year and possibly the year before. I can't remember.
We liked it and it flowed well but this year we are using Making Math Meaningful. I do not like it as much as I did early in the year, but Ems seems to thrive with it. I will probably go back to A Beka next year or BJ.

i found a site to view it and I am seeing that if I go with BJU math i would need to start in 8th grade.. pre algebra. He will be at that level when he finishes his Horizon Mat 6, from what I can tell from the table of contents and such. So Since I have SOS8 Math already from the other two, I am thinking we will go through Pre Alg next year and then go into Algebra with the MUS we will have by then for dd, and then MUS for Geometry as well then see what we want for Alg 2 etc. Since ds is planning to go into Archetectual engineering I think the Maths are important

Why do you think you need to start in preAlgebra or not at all? Plenty of people start BJU at the Algebra level and above. It has a very typical scope and sequence so there is nothing "off" about it that makes it so you have to start BJU on a specific year or not at all.

OH, it is not offence to BJU, that for sure, but I have already the SOS disc in my cubbard from my other kids... so I am thinking since we have that, and will be getting the MUS ALg1 for dd we may just have ds do those two in order of course.
I loved the looks of the BJU, but I am concerned as to if he will need 7th grade or not thats all.. Cause it seems that Horizon covers what thier 7th covers.. and then 8th is the same.. So I will be checking withthe SOS disc and see what it covers again and see if its where we need to go.
My main reason here is that I already have it and why buy the same work twice thatsort of thing
I will be purchasing the MUS for dd, so you see it will only make dollars and cents ( pun) for me to not use it for that.
I do however plan to use it for English! We love the BJU currics!

TMOM, Is the English "on level" or advanced or what? I know when my ds17 did the year of BJU, the 10th grade English was TOUGH! He did it, but ds15 is different, and wouldn't have been able to get through that English!

R&S is advanced. He's doing the 7th grade R&S in his 9th grade year.

What about the TM's? Are they good?

I'm not saying I'm switching, I'm just curious for dd and ds15 as to what it would be like.

    (sorry to threadjack!)

The full TM is great it has copies of what you are to teach, I looked at ds`17s teacher copy when he took that at Private school.
I think it is advanced yes, because it was difficult for ds, though I think dd would have been able to do it, I have a really tough stubborn streak in her and getting her to do more than the required amount was difficult.
Ds11 is so enjoying the English 6 and asked for it after 5 last year. The looks of the text online is strict, but enjoyable? If that is a good discription. It looks like it will challenge him but not be so difficult he will cry about doing it. kwim?
