my son is reading (with help) the Deltora Quest series (ages 8 - 12 recommended). This series has all the good vs evil and the battles, magic, and all that but not as advanced as the Lord of the Rings. There is three series and you can get all of them at Scholastic. (Deltora Quest (series 1, 8 books), Deltora Shadowlands (series 2, 3 books and the book of Deltora monsters), Dragons of Deltora (series 3, 4 books).
I do not know what you do and do not allow your child to read. I tend to let my son read what peaks his interest, the way I see it is that if he is reading and not out getting in trouble or sitting on his PS2 I am doing pretty good.
Sorry so long, hope this gives you some ideas. Also go to Scholastic they usually list age or grade next to the books to give you a good idea which books to choose and they have great prices.

(oh they also have a game at scholastic for the Deltora Quest series that your son can play, my son loves to go play that game there)
